Build That Wall: California Will Become a Sanctuary State by 2018

The State of California is leading the nation yet again in reckless liberal experimentation with its latest decision to become a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants starting in 2018.

Lawmakers early Saturday sent Governor Brown a sanctuary state bill that he is expected to sign after he demanded some changes that will at least weaken its impact. Senate Bill 54 will place limitations on how local law enforcement can communicate with federal immigration authorities. Little do these social justice warriors in California’s halls of power realize that what they are doing is bringing in the very hardline immigration-enforcing police state from the Trump administration that they have been fearing.

After Trump moved to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, liberals have been scrambling to counter Trump’s obvious move to enforce immigration law. California is doing their best to voice outrage and displeasure over the current administration’s preference for following the law, putting their own citizens in harm’s way in the process.

Senate President Pro Tempore, Kevin de Leon, a Democrat who puts his Latino roots before his American citizenship, stated as much, saying, “Californians will not squander precious public safety dollars to tear families apart, take ‘Dreamers’ or deport people who have helped California become the sixth largest economy in the world. This is a message, no doubt, to Washington, D.C., that we will protect the hardworking people of our communities.” This is irresponsible rhetoric and he is pandering to his base, which is what politicians always do, putting one’s reelection before protection of the electorate. But I guess illegals are voting these days now anyway.

It sounds strange to say this, but thank God for Gov. Brown and his sensible alterations to the bill. The final version of the soon-to-be law still limits the ability of local police to detain individuals on immigration holds and also bans local police from targeting people based on their immigration status alone. But Brown’s fixes to the bill now allows local police to at least respond to requests from U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if the individual in question has committed one of the more than 800 crimes outlined in the California Trust Act, which limits “cruel” and “costly” immigration hold requests in local jails.

The California Sheriffs’ Association and many other Sheriffs and local police continue to oppose this measure that essentially tells our local law enforcement to not follow federal immigration law and defy the laws of the land. This cannot happen. We need law and order. Bill Brown, Santa Barbara’s sheriff and president of the Sheriff’s association testified at a hearing in July that the bill provides sanctuary to criminals and endangers the public. By limiting communication with ICE, dangerous gang members will be released without notifying the federal authorities. But here in the Golden State, we put ideology and political party over public safety all the time.

Look no further than the 2015 shooting of Kate Steinle by an illegal alien who had been deported five times in San Francisco, long a sanctuary city. These lawless cities have long put citizens at more risk by allowing these criminals into our neighborhoods. Sanctuary protections make communities less safe and allowing the whole state to become a sanctuary state would be a magnet for these kind of people since they know they can get away with living there without fear of deportation. That is, unless the Trump administration comes in.

Trump’s head of ICE promised a load of arrests on Friday after the news broke about California becoming a sanctuary state.

ICE will now have no choice but to sweep in and conduct its own immigration raids in California’s neighborhoods after this new law. Acting Director Thomas Homan said in a statement Friday that California Gov. Brown’s decision to sign the law would “undermine public safety and hinder ICE from performing its federally mandated mission.” So in attempting to protect its illegal “Dreamers” and others, California’s uber-liberals have put their own people in harm’s way, ensuring a crackdown from the federal government. Good going!

“Ultimately, SB54 helps shield removable aliens from immigration enforcement and creates another magnet for more illegal immigration, all at the expense of the safety and security of the very people it purports to protect,” Homan said. This much is obvious. But this is what the left want. They want open borders. They want a confrontation with the Trump administration. They want to degrade what it means to be an American citizen. Using emotions over logic and caring little for the rule of law, they are actually hurting the very people they look to be sheltering.

A showdown is surely coming in the Supreme Court if this immigration issue becomes further inflamed, especially if other states follow California’s lead and definitely if citizens continue to be murdered by illegals.
