Visualizing Yesterday’s World: The Old Tech That Kids Don’t Know

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

For most people born before the 90’s, a “3 1/2 inch floppy” was once a crucial part of their technological lives; securing and transporting important files and data. Of course nowadays, the 1.44 MB storage space is far from adequate and no new computers come equipped with an appropriate drive for the disks.

Little surprise then, as Statista’s Martin Armstrong notes, that the majority of children today have no idea what one is (despite the fact that ubiquitous software such as Word and Excel still use a floppy disk symbol for their ‘save’ buttons).

You will find more infographics at Statista

As a recent survey by YouGov has shown, 67 percent of the 6 to 18 year olds in the UK don’t know what a floppy disk is. Other essentially obsolete tech such as overhead projectors (once present in almost every classroom), and pagers were recognised even less.

Overhead projectors are present in almost if not all classrooms, I know I used to install them, in every teaching lexicon is the smartboard which uses the device (now integrated) when push comes to shove, if you have a <16 year old in education and they have NOT been taught computer science which is the majority they will not know about old technology such as the vinyl record player unless they have music or have them at home, Ceefax is still on BBC but not on phones so old fuddy duddies like me use it for news, teletext(ITV) died years ago as a commercial failure, the pager morphed into the mobile phone using the same messaging technology so they use one every day and will only hear of them as pagers from old MTV music such as Dr Beat, The Typewriter will be mentioned in Computer Science if they use the keyboard since QUERTY layout was designed to stop the operator typing too fast and damaging the levers since they could hit each other sort of low impact in literal sense but coming with a hefty repair bill, the Video/Music cassette would also be mentioned in Computer Science class, since they were used as data storage and in Media – some schools still have not transferred their programmes onto DVD from Tape in my day in ICT and is likely those were lossed unless they managed to move them onto hard drive(which most should have by now) Since Ready Player One came out a lot of the old technology was mentioned and it is a popular book, and any science fiction fan would have access to even older technology such as wire spools. As a rule then the Humanities student will have a problem with technology today which is not phone based, wiring a plug, fixing their car etc. and it is a self inflicted ignorance, as is not taking CDT, opting for an academic life allows for a good if not substantial income if and only if society is not reducing those roles with technology since White collar jobs are expensive and the first area a company wants to remove from its payroll(which is a shock but most manual jobs are already as automated as they can be). So good luck, either you get your PHD as a specialist or face a life of increasing wage squeezing/Outsourcing or fail in your chosen profession and have no life skills to fall back on(which is the favoured position).
