Recycle-Reuse Chewing Gum- Make Art

One of the things I hate the most is chewing gum. It’s obnoxious that people chomp and pop their gum and even worse that it lands on the ground to be stepped on, under tables and chairs. YUK!  And it’s not biodegradable!

In Canada and in the UK companies such as Gumdrop are on a campaign to reuse chewing gum into a polymer which is being used to make plastic products inthing the Gumdrop gum recycling bins.

I just gotta Eco Ya:

• About £150 million is spent annually by local authorities in the UK on chewing gum removal.
• Every year 472 million tons of chewing gum are consumed around the world.
• Cleaning chewing gum off the streets in the Uk costs 3x the price of a peiece of gum.
• Overall the Sugar Free gum market grew at a US level to just over 1 billion dollars for a healthy 11.8 percent increase in dollars sold. The market had significantly less growth of 1.6 percent for overall units of 819 million. (2008)
• The average American now chews 300 sticks (1.5 lb) of gum per year, according to government statistics,
• Every year over 374 trillion sticks of chewing gum are made.
• In the next 5 years, over 1 million metric tones of chewing gum will be produced.
• The Chewing Gum Industry is profitable market. The world’s chewing gum industry is estimated to be worth approximately US $19 billion.
• If each piece of gum is chewed for 30 minutes, that is 187 billion hours of gum-chewing per year.
• Chewing Gum is not biodegradable
• Singapore banned the sale and chewing of chewing gum in 1992 in order to keep the city clean.

Ben Wilson, age 41, travels around Europe painting the gum that people have spit out on the sidewalks. He can spend up to ten hours painting one piece of gum. This is only about 1 inch.
