Doctor Claims 130 Thousand Elderly Euthanized In UK Hospitals Annually

They call it NICE, but if you could ask patients whose lives were prematurely ended by guidelines of the UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, they’d say it isn’t “nice” at all.

NICE officially recommends something called the Liverpool Care Pathway for looking after terminally ill patients.  But a consulting neurologist for East Kent Hospitals, Professor Patrick Pullicino of the University of Kent, claims the LCP is often instituted because elderly patients are difficult to manage and — get this — to free up hospital beds.  He calls it the equivalent of euthanasia.

Officially, the LCP comes into play when doctors believe death is imminent.  This can result in the removal of feeding tubes that also supply water.  Death is quick.  It usually takes about 33 hours.

Professor Pullicino says it is scientifically impossible to predict death within a time frame of three or four days.  What’s more, he believes putting a patient on LCP is a self-fulfilling prophecy of the end of that life.
Pullicinco’s strong beliefs have saved at least one life.  One Monday he learned of a 71 year-old pneumonia and epilepsy patient who had been put on LCP over the weekend against his family’s wishes.  Pullicino stepped in, the man improved enough to go home to his family and lived another 14 months.

All this serves as a cautionary tale of what can happen in the US with the planned introduction of Obamacare in 2014.  Socialized medicine inevitably results in rationing of care, creating an incentive to eliminate what Adolph Hitler called the “useless eaters.”  After all, the government says it’s the “nice” thing to do.
