David Letterman Goes Off On EPA Fracking!

In this video below,  David Letterman is going off on EPA Fracking and is quoted saying, “the greedy gas and oil companies of this country have decided that they can squeeze every last little ounce of oil and gas out of previously pumped wells by injecting the earth with highly toxic carcinogenic chemicals…”

Fracking which has been getting a lot of media attention over the past year or so as oil and gas reserves are developed in places that historically not been considered economically productive.

So what is epa fracking, it is the process that makes it possible for people to produce these tight oil and gas reservoirs usually in shale formations that have a lot of oil and gas in them but they are
not porous and permeable enough so it can flow freely to the surface on its own.

So what modern operators do is pump large volumes of water and sand into the formations which cracks the rock open and creates a whole bunch of tiny fractures. Sand goes into the fractures to prop them open and then the water is pumped back out leaving the reservoir permeable so the oil and gas can come out to the surface now on its own. Now the problem with tracking is that if it is not done properly the fracked fluids can actually get out of the well and contaminate water formations in the overlying rock.

However if the operator does their job right and sets casing through the potential water bearing formations and cements the pipe in the hole well and then controls the fracking operation with all the fracking material staying in the oil and gas reservoir, it can be contained. Sounds like a lot of it and buts here…..

Based on the limited research I have done, it seems fracking if done right could be safe but it also seems there is a lot of room for error and if shortcuts are taken, it could have a devastating effect.
