Thyroid disease is defined as a condition of malfunction of thyroid. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is over active and produces too much thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is under active and produces very little thyroid hormones. Thyroid cancer is defined as condition in which the cells in the thyroid gland have become cancerous.
C.1. Complications
1. Airway obstruction
Critical airway obstruction is a dreaded complication of a mediastinal mass. The acute management is difficult and catastrophic outcomes have been reported. A total of 19 patients, aged between 13 and 69 years, who had critical major airway obstruction due to mediastinal mass requiring mechanical ventilation were reviewed. Three patients had benign pathologies (retrosternal goitre, bronchogenic cyst, giant left atrium) and three had lymphoma. The remaining patients had advanced malignancies: metastatic mediastinal lymphadenopathy (n=6), thyroid carcinoma (n=1) and oesophageal carcinoma (n=6), according to  Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust(11).

2. Tracheal invasion
There is a report of a case of an elderly female with primary diffuse large B-cell thyroid lymphoma causing an extensive tracheal defect that was managed expectantly with good results(12).

3. Five-year survival rate
The five-year survival rate was 68 per cent, with most patients dying of their lymphoma. This is at odds with the British Thyroid Association statement that the prognosis of this condition is ‘generally excellent’, according to Manchester Royal Infirmary(13).

4. Other complications
According to study, thyroid lymphomas (TL) patients presented with stridor and vocal cord palsy.  dysphagia, weight loss and multi-nodular goitre(14).
