Poisoned, Vomiting, Hospitalized W. Va. Children Close Schools. Media Still Censors 'Poison' Word

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Multiple West Virginia schools closed after sending hundreds of poisoned students home, some vomiting and dizzy, and at least child to the hospital this week, but officials lifted the pregnant women water warning. After nearly a month of at least 300,000 West Virginians’ daily exposure to dangerous chemicals, media continues reporting a ”smell” is making people, instead of the reality that a poison is injuring and sickening people.

A mystery coal industry poison, a toxic brew including but not limited to MCHM and PHh, that smells like licorice, poisoned so many children and youth ill in Kanawha County, five schools cosed this week.

Poisoning of thousands of people persists in southern West Virginia’s through air and water. Government officials, bought by the fossil fuel industry, have said the nine affected counties were all clear to drink and use tap water for other purposes. People continue experiencing chemical burns upon contact with the water.

Wednesday, students and teachers at schools showed signs of poisoning, feeling light-headed, having itchy eyes and noses, and stomach complaints from the poison

One teacher fainted. One student went to the hospital.

Schools closed Wednesday morning and didn’t reopen Thursday.

Due to the poison environment, children and teachers were sick Thursday at Watts, J.E. Robins, and Overbrook elementary schools dismissed classes

Nevertheless, federal health officials advised Thursday that pregnant women could drink the water, backtracking on a previous advisory.

Playing Russian Roulette: Flushing, Testing with Unwitting Children

Follow-up tests at Riverside and Midland Trail did not detect the one chemical that government is testing for in their running water. Several rounds of earlier tests also didn’t detect the chemical at the two schools.

Using a type of Russian Roulette on students and their teachers, more water pipe flushing and testing were conducted this week so the five schools could reopen.

Schools reopened Friday and officials said they’d see how their latest flushing worked according to how many people showed signs of being poisoned again.

Meanwhile, poisons have been bioaccumulating in each body for a month as individuals inhale a poison and come in contact with it. Officials reported the leak on Jan. 9, but residents could smell the leaking poison weeks before then.

Since government officials admittedly do not know what they are testing for, it’s tests and declarations that the water is safe are unacceptable.

It is unacceptable that officials are not addressing poisoned air being breathed and bioaccumulating.

It is obvious to independent scientists that there are extra chemicals in the toxic stew that has tainted the 9-county area’s drinking water and air. Government, however, continues to test for evidence of the same chemical, MCHM, then claiming people are safe.

For almost a month, news reporters claim a “smell” has made people ill, refusing to use the word poison, or indicate people are being poisoned.

The only smells that make people ill are those that do so by association, a nauseating smell, such a vomit. The smell of licorice does not make tens of thousands of people sick in an area. By not calling the event poisoning, it seems less dangerous.

Pound the networks with this story – they are CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT in not reporting it.

      • Deborah Dupre

Oh Grand Daddy – It’s truly remarkable you say what you do, obviously, because look how few others here have! Thank you.

There’s reason mainstream is not all over this crime and reporting it. Try going up against the shills, trolls and hackers paid well by Koch – the same company paying Freedom distributors.

My heart goes out to those children. Surely they are unwitting non-consensual human experimental subjects at this stage. ‘Let’s see how much poison they can take and what will it do them?’ Wouldn’t be the first time. Bless you for your compassion.

Calling all preppers: Since this is the perfect time to be testing all those water filters we see advertised, I’d love to hear from any using any filters /distillers during this awful time. Perhaps Before it’s News might look into this aspect.

    • Paul Brown

We need detox information that works. As for filters, the culprit is probably a volatile organic compound, so it would probably pass through most filters and come across in a still. Maybe lots of activated charcoal would remove it, but I wouldn’t trust it. Maybe, just maybe, if you can’t smell it it’s safe, but I’d still hesitate to use it. Where are the reports from the independent scientists like Yuri Gorby?

      • Deborah Dupre

Detox poisoned people? Government didn’t provide survival detox kits when it was proven that up to 40 million were poisoned along the Gulf. Why bother for only 300K? “Let them eat, drink, breath poison!” the oil barons say.

This is another case of medical inhumanity, except at least most doctors have told people to not drink the toxic water, despite the federal government [Health czar Kathleeen Sebelius - with strong support by 'family planning' organization rooted in Nazi-style forced abortions] saying it’s even safe enough for pregnant women. She, with Obama’s blessings, did the same in the Gulf and miscarriages have been rampant ever since, as written in the book ‘Vampire of Macondo.’

I’m surprised she hasn’t offered free mental health hotlines for poisoned West Virginians, as she did across the Gulf, insisting their injuries from Nalco’s Corexit and BP’s oil were all in women’s heads and they needed mental help.

It seems independent scientists are holding their findings for court. They would not release detailed info on the level of formaldehyde West Virginian’s are getting into their systems remember?

Back to detoxing – remember: baking soda, the least expensive way to eliminate toxins? Please read about it.

        • Paul Brown

No, detox doesn’t poison people, and I never suggested it does.

Nazi-style abortions? Kathleen Sebelius? This obsessive outburst is not helpful.

Independent scientists are holding their findings for court rather than helping people deal with the poisons? That’s no better than the government, when people are in critical need of help. It’s crimiinal.

Baking soda? It probably can’t hurt to try it in reasonable amounts. It’s a folk remedy that might work for some toxins but is unlikely to remove aromatic organic compounds, which this appears to be, but might help treat some of the symptoms. In the medical literature, sodium bicarbonate is used as a buffer in therapy for metabolic acidosis, acid stomach, gastroesophageal reflux, excited delirium (ExDS) associated with law enforcement restraint, and treatment of some cancers. Metabolic acidosis occurs in a lot of circumstances and affects a lot of organs. If the poisoning in Charleston has resulted in metabolic acidosis – very easy to test for – bicarbonate therapy would definitely be useful.

On the other hand, see “Baking soda misuse as a home remedy: case experience of the California Poison Control System.” Like any folk remedy or medical treatment, it can have side effects. In fact there are documented ill effects of sodium bicarbonate in coal bed effluent and chronic over-ingestion can be harmful.

Some other folk remedies might also be helpful. Dietary supplements with unknown ingredients should be avoided, because they often have harmful constituents, and remedies that place stress on the body, like overheating, should only be used with a physician’s advice because some chronic or acute conditions could be aggravated.

Communicating over the internet occludes our ability to monitor the tone and body language of others.

When Deb wrote, “Detox poisoned people?”, that was shorthand for “the government is not interested in helping to detox people who have been poisoned.”

Not that Paul implied that when he wrote “We need detox information that works.”

But again, communicating by letter is tricky business and it is easy to “read into it” things that aren’t there, and to misconstrue sarcasm for a direct statement.

That said, perhaps Deb calling a spade a spade, and indicating exactly why she uses such labels to identify the actions of the FED GOV, will help convince others NOT to trust what they say. At the very least, why not let her vent in peace??

AS far as proper detox for such volatile compounds, they are generally short lived as long as your body is at optimal efficiency, which most are not. So here is an excellent article as to how to use natural food based supplements and food itself in order to optimize your bodies own liver based detox function.

          https://www.cncahealth.com/explore/learn/green-living/the-natural-way-to-detox-and-why-you-should

Add some fulvic acid, preferably from a substance called Shilajit, and also Chlorella for further effect.

Crude MCHM is industrial waste from plastics manufacturing. Why hasn’t mainstream media reported that?

West Virginians are just garbage, throw-away people to American Water Works and Eastman Chemical. No reason to a big outfit like Eastman to tell the peons what’s in the copolymer resin manufacturing waste they sell/dispose of to the rubes at Freedom – it’s a trade secret! Eastman had a billion or so in sales from their specialty plastics business last year. Heck, they just built a new CHDM line in Tennessee a couple of years ago. That’s a job-creator – what’s a few dead WV babies to them?

To Eastman’s credit, although not at fault, they did seem to offer some help initially:
      http://www.eastman.com/literature_center/misc/Q_and_A_West_Virginia_Spill.pdf

The proper, ethical response by Eastman SHOULD have extended to warning WVAW customers that the health dangers were largely unknown and NO detectable amount of MCHM should EVER be acceptable in their entire water system no matter what the cost to WVAW, period. They should have blasted Freedom and WVAW for the way they handled it and demanded that nobody should be exposed to their MCHM. It would have actually been good PR for Eastman for a change. They had no liability for the Freedom or WVAW goofballs.

The second Eastman waffled and deferred to their lackeys at Freedom or the WVAW stooges, they became morally complicit to the damage. They could have been a dose of sanity to counter corporate water’s cheapskate ignorance and told people their MCHM does not belong in your water at ANY level and purification may have resulted in other toxins being released. Instead, they lawyered up, covered their butts and washed their hands of the matter after offering a useless MSDS sheet and some water testing advice to WVAW. As long as Eastman’s lawyers have enough to pounce on anyone that claims MCHM harmed them, they can kick West Virginians to the side of the road.

Now if you were from Illinois, you would have been privy to at least a few Eastman secrets:
      http://www.isawwa.org/search/all.asp?c=&bst=eastman

Don’t read the two documents above if you’re not an Eastman employee. It’s the LAW!!

      • Deborah Dupre

Thank you! Such a wealth of compassion and information, Paveway.

You say, “The proper, ethical response by Eastman SHOULD have extended to warning WVAW customers that the health dangers were largely unknown and NO detectable amount of MCHM should EVER be acceptable in their entire water system no matter what the cost to WVAW, period.”

Agreed, and so do most West Virginians as they at least are not drinking the Kool-aid – but too many are bathing in it and breathing it. Hate to say it, but cancer, miscarriage and birth defect clocks are ticking louder each passing day. But what does Koch and all his lackeys care?

What about evacuations for most vulnerable people?

You also say “They should have blasted Freedom and WVAW for the way they handled it and demanded that nobody should be exposed to their MCHM.” If an individual did this – they’d be in jail right now – not messing around with their poison and containers and pipes to spew more of their poison into the system and government have ordered Freedom to do. Tomblin and his appointees all need to go.

Thank you for the Eastman secrets I cannot read.

        • Paveway IV

The Eastman secrets us little people are allowed to read give a slightly better idea of what the laundry list of chemicals on the MCHM MSDS sheet actually mean.

It’s important to note that MCHM is not what Eastman is trying to produce – although they do sell some of it as a purified product. They are trying to make CHDM, which is then used with other chemicals to create modified PET plastic resins. The list of chemicals on the ‘Crude MCHM’ MSDS sheet are pretty much the impurities Eastman lists on their CHDM specification sheets:

All of the multi-syllable Crude MCHM components on the MSDS sheet belong in one of three groups:

          1) Intermediate Boiling-Point Glycols: DMCD and Monoester, Monoether, and Monoaldehydes of MCHM
          2) High Boiling-Point Glycols: Diesther and diethers (and unrecovered CHDM)
          3) Water and methyl alcohol produced during the reactions

The question of crude MCHM’s toxicity (or lack of it) has to be considered along with each of the other components. 1% of something in crude MCHM may be of concern if its 10,000x more toxic than the main MCHM component. Worse yet, we have no idea of what other impurities or toxins may have been introduced during the reactions.

The back story to all of this is that there are several huge lawsuits against coal companies for disposing spent coal slurry into injection wells or old mines. They leak – like they always do – and poison the aquifers. Victims know darn well that the cancer, birth defects and numerous health problems are related somehow.

          http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/15/massey-lawsuit-over-700-a_n_783835.html

I don’t know if Eastman has been named in any of these lawsuits yet, but they obviously have a lot to lose if their coal-washing plastic waste is linked with any health problems from contaminated aquifers. Its in Eastman’s interest to spin the WVAW poisoning as no big deal so (in the public’s mind) MCHM isn’t associated with health issues. That way, other West Virginians with MCHM slurry-poisoned aquifers will have a hard time coming after Eastman.

I have to wonder how bad the poor guys working at West Virginia coal-washing plants have been poisoned by MCHM over the years?

How sad that this was probably all done as a profitable/easy way to get rid of plastic manufacturing waste. Bonus irony: CHDM is used to produce plastics marketed as endocrine-disruptor (BPA and phthalate) free. So when your aquifer is poisoned by their industrial waste, you can be sure the plastic used in the bottled water they send you is safe. Yipee!

      What?

    • Joe Miller

These companies have gotten away with their activities due to idiot Republicans obstructing regulation. So they got jobs. Pity for their children.

      • Paul Brown

Good point. But actually, in WV, the Democrats are owned by the fossil fuel industry just as much as the Republicans. The same money gets them elected. There is a handful of decent legislators from both parties, but they have to compromise in order to accomplish anything useful.

Corruption in WV is bipartisan, sad to say.

Come to think of it, the Dems aren’t much better at the national level. I refuse to vote for either party, only third-party candidates. If we all did, we wouldn’t have the one-party system we’re cursed with today.

      • Deborah Dupre

Plus “regulatory” laws are a total joke in the fossil fuel industry anyway because it’s controlled by mafia mentality and always has been. It’s corrupt to the core and there isn’t any law that will change that. This is one reason I favor renewable energy owned and controlled by individuals instead of literally giving personal power to corporate.

Alas, with Koch boys funding key people at every level of society, including alternative media, to put psychos in office, to discredit renewable energy whenever its suggested, to fund wild distractions and disinformation – you’d think we don’t have much of a chance. Nevertheless, renewable energy keeps growing – and so does the 3rd party power.

Now – it seems to me, if the 3rd party wants any chance of winning, there needs to be one and only one 3rd party instead of several little parties each running good candidates and thus diving the 3rd party votes so none have a chance.
