So, Popeye was right, and I’m glad I listened to him and my mother eating spinach as a kid!

Yes, eating spinach daily could make your brain 11 years younger, let me explain.

We all know that veggies are good for us, however, did you know that eating just one portion of dark leafy greens a day could stave off dementia?

Researchers at Rush University in Chicago evaluated the diet and mental ability of around 950 elderly people every year for 2 to 10 years.
Participants, who had an average age of 81 years, took part in nineteen different tests to assess their mental capacity & function. This group identified, from a list of 144 items, what food and drinks were included in their diet.

The adults who ate dark leafy greens, including spinach and kale once or twice a day experienced significantly less cognitive decline when compared to those that did not eat the greens, even when other factors such as education, exercise and family history of dementia were taken into account.

The researchers revealed at the Experimental Biology Conference in Boston that, on average, the group participants who ate dark leafy greens daily, halted their decline mentally, by an average of 11 years!
Lead researcher Martha Clare Morris said: “Losing one’s memory or cognitive abilities is one of the biggest fears for people as they get older. Since declining cognitive ability is central to Alzheimer’s disease and dementias, increasing consumption of green leafy vegetables could offer a very simple, affordable and non-invasive way of potentially protecting your brain from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.”Morris went onto say, that the benefits of consuming leafy greens were most likely linked to their high levels of vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamin K, lutein, folate, beta-carotene and calcium.

Time to put the benefits of spinach to work for you and it’s so easy to do!

Start with one of my favorites, a fresh, organic strawberry and spinach salad with pine nuts and avacado, yum!

Or, go with your favorite morning smoothie in the blender and just add spinach. The benefits of spinach are many and the best part is, it doesn’t change the taste of your smoothie but you get all the nutrients from adding it, bonus!

Add spinach to your sandwich in place of iceberg lettuce which has no nutritional value and you just increased your nutritional value greatly with that one change. Make sure you always have a pack of organic spinach in your refrigerator so you can use it with almost any meal.

Another easy way to gain the benefits of spinach, especially with your children, is to dice the spinach up very small and mix it in your tomato sauce and add to quinoa spaghetti, so delicious! The kids don’t even know there is spinach in there as the sauce covers it up!

And the list goes on…the point is, spinach is one of the easiest dark leafy greens to incorpate into every meal without getting compliants from your family on the taste / texture thing and your making sure they are getting all the wonderful nutrients!
