What Are the Best Ergogenic Aids to Help Boost Athletic Performance

First, let’s define what ergogenic aids are and how they can help you.
Ergogenic aids are any external influences that enhance athletic performance or facilitate physical exercise. These include certain performance-enhancing drugs, mechanical aids, physiological aids, nutritional aids (sports supplements), and psychological aids.
However, what I believe to be the most important of all ergogenic aids is, water, let’s review.
Now that there are advanced dope testing methods available, the possibilities of detection and life ban from a sport, are very realistic. So, athletes and coaches are looking for legal ways to improve performance and shorten recovery time. The numerous ways by which performance may be improved are known as Ergogenic Aids.
Ergogenic Aids may:
- directly influence the physiological capacity of a particular body system thereby improving performance
- remove psychological constraints which impact performance
- increase the speed of recovery from training and competition
Some of the most common and recognizable ergogenic aids are;
- performance enhancing illegal drugs
- Sports drinks
- caffeine
- sodium bicarbonate
- water
Okay, so I’m not a fan of performance enhancing illegal drugs, number one because they are illegal and number two, because there are health related consequences that will development sooner or later with consistent use. Sports drinks are mostly loaded with cheap synthetic chemicals, sugar and caffeine and are hazardous to your health so that is not the answer!
Sodium Bicarbonate as one of the ergogenic aids
Energy production which is important during performance events lasting from 60 seconds to 15 minutes, increases the level of acidity inside the cells of muscle. Not long after, it also increases the level of acidity in the blood as well. This increase of acidity within the muscle cells is one of the major reasons fatigue develops. If there was a way to reduce the level of acidity within the muscle cells, then theoretically, one could delay the onset of fatigue and exercise at a higher intensity for longer!
Sodium bicarbonate is an alkalizing agent and therefore reduces the acidity of the blood (known as a buffering action). By buffering acidity in the blood, bicarbonate may be able to draw more of the acidity out of the muscle cells. This should delay the onset of fatigue during physical activity.
Excessive consumption of caffeine as an ergogenic aid is dehydrating, and dehydration can be debilitating and even deadly if not addressed immediately. Review this chart here and see the negative effects of dehydration.
If you are a coffee lover, go ahread and have your cup of joe in the morning but I would recommend against using coffee (caffeine) as one of the ergogenic aids in addition to what you consume when you wake up.
Also, and this is very important and why water is my favorite of all the ergogenic aids available. When we wake up, we are ALL dehydrated, that’s just how we start our day. And, if your are consuming coffee (caffeine) before anything else in the morning, you are really putting your health in jeopardy with consistent use.
The number one thing you should be reaching for in the morning, besides a hammer to smash your alarm clock, is your bottle of water!
We need water to hydrate ourselves and help our internal organs flush out toxins before we start consuming anything else in the morning. Add a lemon to your morning water and that really benefits the kidney’s and the liver.
Water, water and more water is the most natural and effective of the ergogenic aids and mix in a tablespoon of some food grade baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and take your performance level up a few notches!
