(N.Morgan) As our eyes are known to be the window to our souls, our faces can be a reflection of unhealthy dietary habits. Common skin problems could be a result of poor diet choices. This is according to naturopathic doctor and skin care specialist Nigma Talib, who recently penned the book ‘Reverse The Signs Of Ageing: The Revolutionary Inside-Out Plan To Glowing, Youthful Skin’. She treats notable celebrities like Sienna Miller, makeup guru Charlotte Tilbury and has been featured in Vanity Fair Magazine.

Talib is certain that what we eat and drink has a direct affect on our complexions. She recognizes and calls this collection of symptoms “dairy face”, “wine face”, “sugar face”, and “gluten face”.

In an excerpt from her book, Talib states:

“The second a patient walks into my clinic I can immediately tell the sort of foods they tend to over-eat just by checking the way their face is ageing. In fact, I often find myself reading random faces in the street. I want to run up to strangers and tell them to cut milk out of their diet or hold back on the pasta as it is so clear from their complexion that their diet is doing them harm. For some people, just one wheat-heavy day – cereal for breakfast, bread for lunch and pasta for dinner – is enough to cause bloating and puffiness. A couple of glasses of wine can trigger fine lines around the mouth and eyes, and – if you are intolerant – a creamy sauce or a piece of cheese might trigger a spotty break-out or dark circles under the eyes.”

Face mapping is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), but many medical professionals in the western world are not trained to look for these more subtle signs. However, alternative practitioners like Dr. Talib can tell when someone walks into their office with a drinking problem because it is written all over their face.

What one eats or eats too much of determines how the face will age.

“Any issues with the digestion of certain foods – perhaps you have an unknown intolerance, or you eat more of a food than you can comfortably digest – can cause a cascade of chemical and hormonal changes that speed the ageing process internally and externally, with the results swiftly showing on your face. Certain food groups appear to be particularly damaging: gluten, dairy, sugar and alcohol. Each taxes the body in specific ways, contributing to a cluster of ageing symptoms such as spots, puffiness, changes in skin tone, premature fine lines and wrinkles or sagging.” (Talib)

Where you age can indicate which organs are overburdened and even the root cause.

The part of your face that is most affected – whether it is your forehead, chin, cheeks or eyes – will depend on the part of the body being put under most stress by the food group. Here is how Dr. Talib identifies the what is going on with her clients:

Wine Face

Symptoms: Pronounced lines or redness between the eyes, droopy eyelids, enlarged pores, dehydrated skin with feathery lines across cheeks, flushed cheeks and nose, deep nasolabial folds.

Although called wine face, these signs can occur in anyone who tends to consume a high level of alcohol weekly. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, affects the liver, and a large amount of sugar found in alcohol tends to destroy skin elasticity.

How to Fix It: Stop consuming alcohol for three weeks and then follow the 80/20 rule. Abstain 80% of the time and indulge 20% of the time.

Sugar Face

Symptoms: Lines and wrinkles on the forehead, sagging under the eyes, gaunt look to the face, painful pustular spots all over the face, thinning of the skin, a grey/pasty white hue to the skin.

It is easy to get into the habit of reaching for a sugary treat when our energy is low at 2 pm, it is an instant pick me up. However, what goes up, must come down. When high blood sugar levels inevitably plummet, it creates a vicious cycle that can leave you craving more and more.

As stated earlier, sugar can destroy skin elasticity. According to face mapping, the forehead is associated with the process of digestion, which is why ‘sugar face’ may manifest as blotches or wrinkles on the forehead.

It can also throw off the delicate balance of our gut bacteria which wreaks havoc not only on our face but digestion and the entire body.

How to Fix It: Just stop eating processed sugar. One can gradually remove sugar from their diet if cutting it off completely is too difficult. Even if you just cut your intake in half and gradually wean yourself off sugar, you will notice rapid improvements in your complexion. Try using more natural options like fruit, honey or dates in place of refined white sugar.

Not all sugar is bad for you. Listen to what David Wolfe has to say in the video below:

David Wolfe: The Sugar Conspiracy

Dairy Face

Symptoms: Swollen eyelids, bags and dark circles under eyes, small white spots and bumps on the chin.

Overtime, many people lose the ability to digest dairy properly. This causes inflammation as the body tries to fight off the dairy with the inflammation inducing chemicals.

For example, the same inflammatory process that causes redness, swelling and heat around a sprained ankle or splinter, can trigger puffy eyelids, under-eye bags and dark circles on your face.

Also, most of the milk on the market is full of artificial hormones that are fed to the cows. These also cause problems by disrupting your hormone system and shows up in the chin area which in face mapping represents the reproductive organs.

How to Fix It: If one feels that they may have an intolerance to dairy, they should remove it completely from their diet for three weeks and observe any changes in their complexion but also their digestion and energy levels!

Gluten Face

Symptoms: Puffy red cheeks, dark pigmentation patches or spots around the chin.

The reaction to gluten takes its toll on the immune system, in turn disrupting the delicate balance of reproductive hormones, resulting in spots or dark pigmentation on the chin, the area associated with the reproductive organs.

Some patients who have been suffering for years from Rosacea – a skin condition characterised by a red rash over the cheeks – have found it much improved, or entirely controlled, when they remove gluten from their diets.

How to Fix It: If gluten is the problem, cut it from your diet. When it comes to gluten, “cutting back” won’t do the trick, it has to be completely removed. Drink plenty of water and get enough fiber. This will help balance out the skin and redefine your cheekbones.

Cosmic radiation and DNA is the biggest culprit to aging. Since there is nothing you can do about those culprits . Enjoy the good things in life in moderation and try to avoid the negative people and situations as much as possible. Case in point, the now deceased Jack La lane took vitamins , exercised and ate vegetable juices and lived into his 90′s but he did look his age. He looked healthy but he did look his age.

TCM is a tricky issue in that you have to find a practitioner with a proven track record, preferably a Chinese person who studied in China. Over here we have lots of practitioners, some of whom studied in China, but they’re all German. That being the case, how well can a German learn Chinese in order to be able to absorb all that material when they study it in China? I know some people (myself included) who underwent TCM and spent 100s of Euros on it, to no avail. I went with a guy who does energy medicine and although I did have concrete results, I sensed that he was stretching it because at first he told me 3 treatments @ 60 Euros but it was more like 10 and I still wasn’t as well as I had been before my stroke. I have managed to get all my capabilities back, with one notable exception: balance.
From personal experience I can relate that what they say about having a “wine face” is definitely not true under all circumstances. I say all circumstances because although I’ve been struggling with wine addiction for over 40 years, I do not look like that. Why. Well, for one thing I don’t consume any sugar whatsoever. I don’t use toothpaste, shampoo, cosmetics, MSG, aspartame, fresh-water fish, fried foods, potatoes, or any kind of fat. I DO consume 1/2 a head of garlic every day and take every single vitamin and mineral known to man, especially the B vitamins, and E. I also do 6 drops of iodine tincture every day. I drink in excess of 10 cups of coffee a day, I smoke about a pack a day, and I usually sleep 4-5 hours a night, which suits me fine.
Yet, when people ask me how old I am they’re absolutely amazed that I look exactly 25 years younger than I really am. I’ve had to actually show my ID just to prove that I ain’t kidding. So is it the garlic that’s doing this? Avoiding all these toxins like sodium lauryl sulfate, methylisothiazole, all the E-numbered additives, or what? COULD IT ACTUALLY BE THE WINE?
Alcohol is a preservative, and wine contains hundreds of congeners whose effects have not been studied all that well. And being who I am, I don’t do anything half-heartedly. I can drink even a Russian under the table because I usually drink about 4 liters a night (about 1 gallon) and I drink alone and off the web, so as not to reveal any incriminating secrets (believe me, I got LOTS of those). That’s when I DO drink, which most of the time I don’t. I maintain my weight around 70 kg, which I do to control my type 2 diabetes. While the wine may have been instrumental in bringing about the diabetes, and the stroke, it certainly hasn’t affected my mind. First time I ever got totally wasted was when I was 9, and by 13 I was drinking regularly. When I took my SATs I scored 1250 and graduated 8th out of 465, which isn’t too bad. Oh, and I passed my stockbroker’s exam with flying colours 30 years ago.
So, while TCM works wonders for the average person, it doesn’t work for everybody. No two people are alike, and you can’t use cookie-cutter logic to diagnose or treat every illness and have it apply to everybody.

      • CrowPie

I agree. I have been highly addicted to Coca-Cola sense before I can remember. I still look very young for my age and I have never suffered acne.

        • CrowPie

          *since*

BTW….I am at my ideal weight and BMI.

          • Sun Rabbit

Me too. I had my BMI and fat measured when I signed up with a different health insurance company, and it was well within the norm. If you drink lots of Coca Cola and you’re OK, then I would see no reason on earth to give it up.

            • Pink Slime

Well, well, even the CEO of Coke reads BIN!

          • Pink Slime

Are you comparing yourself to a Samoan?

    • SuperMario

Well, my complexion will be destroyed then!

    • Pink Slime

      Hello Angle#3(prelim),

Charlie here. Why did you use the photo of Charlie with the “sugar face”? This is breaching protocol Angle#3(prelim), but I do appreciate you at least leaving the pigment out. But couldn’t you at least remove the pimples too?

Shall I tell them about your “gluten” face after eating my doughnuts??

Please come to the office to disgust, er discuss……

      Signed,

Charlie (eating a “frosty” one)

    • Factory Farms FEAR the MooCow

      Who cares.
If you want to drink high FRUCTOSE corn syrup instead, go ahead, it will cause worse age related loooking 900 year old wrinkle instead.

    • Bacchus

Well, I find that wine makes ugly people look better. How about a study on the long term effects of drinking Coke?

      • Sun Rabbit

With a username like Bacchus I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re a wine-o like me. Look at it this way, Adam lived for 900 years, and all the other patriarchs lived for hundreds of years and they didn’t have any Coke back then. But they did have wine!
Furthermore, the instinct to consume wine is a subconscious one because it transcends species boundaries. To wit: according to an article in Modern Drunkard magazine (yes, there really is such a thing and it exists in print form as well), there’s a tribe of monkeys in Indonesia who live in an area where there’s a mountain with a flat top that has all these holes in it. What they do is they pick fruits, put them in the pits, and stomp on them. About a month later, the dominant male leads the tribe to the pits and makes his second-in-commad taste the liquid. After that they all start drinking it, and a drunken orgy ensues.
Another anecdote: the former owner of one of the houses I bought has a pet donkey who’s an alcoholic. If he doesn’t get his 4 beers a day he starts throwing temper tantrums.
So although wine might make OTHER people look better, that’s more due to the effects it has on your limbic system and cerebral cortex in general. And usually it works by just enhancing the feelings you already have for a particular person. Sure, alcohol has many deleterious effects on the body, but it can actually help you survive an otherwise fatal car crash. Why? Because your body is more relaxed, and when the impact occurs, you don’t tense up. Alcohol also improves hearing, but that’s about the only function it actually does improve. That’s why when I drink I always listen to music, and strangely enough I always want to listen to Russian music. Could it be because they wrote it under the influence, that people under the influence like it? Could be!
