The three main ways coconut oil is produced are:

• Centrifuge – the coconut oil meat (called “copra”) is spun to release the oil
• Refined – this is usually “RBD” which stands for refined, bleached, and deodorized”
• Expeller pressed – the copra is mechanically pressed using a hydraulic press

Understanding the process of coconut oil production

Each process varies in the amount of machines and chemicals that are used to create the oil. The more aggressive the machine, the more heat is created and the more chemicals are used, the less natural or pure the coconut oil becomes.

The term, “cold pressed,” applies to either centrifuge or expeller pressed oil. When coconut oil is pressed without the use of chemicals, it’s called “virgin coconut oil”, but because it’s mechanically pressed, it still gets heated, which reduces quality.

Most “cold” pressed coconut oil is actually heated up to 120 degrees. While kept under “air conditioned” conditions to reduce heat, the friction created from the centrifuged process still raises the temperature of the coconut oil above what is considered “raw” (104°F).

Skinny Coconut Oil takes the best features of virgin coconut oil, but hand-presses the coconut oil to create a new form of coconut oil called, “cold processed”. This process keeps the oil cool to ensure all of its vitamins and minerals remain intact.
