food-shopping(NaturalHealth365) Many contaminated foods – within China – have disillusioned its citizens and are putting the countries that receive their exports at risk.  While many shipments from China to the U.S. are turned away due to unsafe additives, drug residues, mislabeling and general filth, some produce shipments from China are making their way into our country under the guise of being “organic.” (But, are they really safe to eat?)

Such guarantees from China are far from reliable. Factors contributing to contaminated foods from the exporter include severe nationwide environmental pollution from unregulated industrial growth, soil and water laden with toxic heavy metals, fraudulent labeling, and rampant corruption in the government and manufacturing sectors.

It’s always preferable to favor local produce where the source and processes and can be verified, especially when the health risks of contaminated foods can be so grave.

Beware of these 9 contaminated foods from China – including so-called ‘organic’ fruits and vegetables

1. Fish

Around 80 percent of tilapia fish sold in the U.S. comes from China, and about half of U.S. cod. With the horrific water pollution issues in China, no one should be eating their fish.

2. Chicken

China is often beset with foodborne illnesses like avian flu. For this reason as well as environmental concerns, chicken imported from China should be avoided.

3. Apples and apple juice

The U.S. has recently moved to allow the import of Chinese apples. Non-organic apples are already on the list of the U.S. “dirty dozen,” but even so-called organic fruit from China likely poses a health risk. With half of U.S. apple juice coming from China as well, buyers should definitely beware.

4. Rice

Yes, rice is a staple in China and a lot of U.S. rice is imported from there. However, some Chinese rice has been found to be made of resin and potato, resulting in a plastic-like consistency.

5. Mushrooms

Around 34 percent of processed mushrooms are imported from China. It’s best to verify that any mushrooms you buy are American- or Canadian-grown.

6. Salt

Salt made for use in industrial settings has made its way on to dining room tables throughout the world.  Looking for a safer option?  Discover the true health benefits of sea salt – and avoid the processed salt sold on the market today.

7. Black Pepper

A Chinese vendor was caught trying to pass off flaked mud as black pepper.  Again, know your source and protect your health.

8. Green Peas

Phony green peas have also been discovered in China. They are made of soy, sodium metabisulfite, green dye, and a small amount of real peas.  Simply put, don’t buy any peas from China.

9. Garlic

Nearly one-third of garlic in U.S. food stores is from China, but some of it has been found to be laced with the pesticide methyl bromide.  With so many healthier brands – this won’t be too difficult to avoid.  Be sure to shop wisely.

Bottom line: With so many risks and variables related to foods from China, it’s probably best to steer clear of it. Your health and well being could be at stake. When shopping, know your source, buy from trusted organic sources, and favor local produce from farmers’ markets as much as possible.
