Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women and kills one in every 13 minutes globally. It is the second most common cancer amongst Indian women with more than half a million new cases getting detected annually. If detected early many women can survive breast cancer easily.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. The importance of breast cancer awareness is been echoing for ages. But in still people are unaware about the detection techniques and treatment modalities of this deadly disease. It’s quite simple and easy to detect breast cancer with a self breast examination which usually takes 2-5 minutes.
Baby Memorial Hospital inaugurated breast cancer awareness drive “Breast Cancer – Know it to beat it” on 25th October 2016. Mrs. Uma Behra – City Police Commissioner, Kozhikode was the chief guest for the event. Speaking at the event Uma Behra quoted saying “when it comes to health, women take a back seat, after all caring for others is in their DNA. This scenario should change and women should give more importance to their health. When it comes to breast cancer understanding the symptoms and awareness about its treatment can help save their lives”. Delivering the presidential address Dr. K G Alexander Chairman and Managing Director of Baby Memorial Hospital emphasized on the importance of early detection, he cited his personal experience where his mother was diagnosed and treated successfully only because it was diagnosed at the right time.
The oncology team at BMH comprising of Dr. Sasindran PR, Head – Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Sajeevan, Sr. Consultant – Medical Oncology, Dr. Shaji Ayillath, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Dr. Vishnu Rajan Nambiar, Jr. Consultant – Radiation Oncology and Dr. Dhanya K.S, Jr. Consultant – Radiation Oncology spoke during the event and answered questions from public. Hussain Cheruthuruthy, Director Wellness Foundation also spoke at the event. The event was well received with more than 300 people participating in the event.
“Know it to beat it” campaign is organized in association with wellness foundation, in coming days BMH and wellness foundation will organize awareness sessions across Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Malappuram.
As a continuation of “Know it to beat it” BMH is also organizing a “Myth Buster Event”. Women can participate in a quiz about breast cancer. Our team will reach out to public with a Tablet pre-loaded with the myths and facts quiz. Winners will be rewarded. Flyers explaining methods of self breast examination will also be distributed.
