Diabetes population in the BRIC region is growing continuously. All four BRIC countries diabetes population is growing year on year due to their growing population and double digit diabetes prevalence. Diabetes prevalence rate in Russia was 11.1 percent in 2015, highest among the all BRIC countries. At present, more than 12 Million Russian population is suffering from diabetes. China is having a diabetes prevalence of 10.6 percent followed by Brazil with 10.2 percent. India has the lowest diabetes prevalence among all with 8.7 percent.
From 2006 the number of diabetic patients in Russia has grown by 60% percent. The Russian government is taking several initiatives to control diabetes. From 1996 to 2002 a total of USD 198 Million have been spent on Federal Targeted Programme on Diabetes. From 2002 till 2012 a sub-programme on diabetes is being introduced into Federal Targeted Programme on Diabetes.
Russia direct annual cost of diabetes is USD 12.5 Billion. Out of this 9 percent of direct cost is associated with diabetes drugs market, Blood Glucose Device Market. 42 percent of the cost is associated with diabetes related complications and rest 49 percent is associated with hospitalisation, outpatient services and other care.
