Sex In Older Age Preserves The Memory

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Having regular sex can help preserve the memory of the elderly adults. That was the conclusion reached by the Australian psychologist Mark Allen. The results of the work of the scientist can be found in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.

In total, 6016 adults aged 50 and over (2672 men, 3344 women) completed an episodic memory task and self-report questions related to health, sexual activity, and emotional closeness. After analyzing data on the intimate life, the scientist concluded that, despite the fact that over time sex does not improve memory, sex can help support it at a higher level. In addition, the emotional connection with the partner also affects the quality of memory positively.

The results of the study showed that married couples who continue to be sexually active in the elderly age, feel happier and more satisfied with their relationship than those who become less active or even cease to be active in sexual life due to some erectile dysfunction or other problems with health.

Contrary to widespread belief, age is not a prognostic factor in stopping sexual activity: most healthy people remain a need of sexual intercourse to a very old age.

Two-thirds of the respondents reported having a regular sexual partner and regular sexual life. It is this part of the asked people who demonstrated the best results with cognitive techniques.

Sexual satisfaction of elderly people, as it turned out, is directly related to their mental abilities. Participants who do not despise sex at this age are much less likely to face such problems as loss of memory and confusion. This connection was especially vivid in women.

It has also been found that the environmental factors influence the prevention of dementia and preservation of the clearness of the mind in the elderly age. In addition, cognitive abilities are positively affected by social relationship.
