CDC Weekly US Map: Influenza Summary Update

This year’s cold and flu season is on track to be one of the worst in decades, says a public health official.

Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, told CNN that it could be as bad as the 2017-18 season, which the CDC says was the deadliest in four decades. 

“Hopefully this turns around and comes down, but if it continues on the trajectory it’s on, it’s not going to be good,” Fauci said.

The CDC says in its latest update that flu activity is high and the infectious diasese is now widespread in all but 5 states,  

The agency estimates there have been at least 6.4 million flu illnesses, 55,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths from flu so far this season. That includes 27 children who have died from flu.

Flu seasons the past few years have been particularly brutal. The 2017-2018 season was unusually severe and the deadliest in years, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The 2018-2019 season was the longest in a decade, lasting more than 21 weeks, per the CDC.

An updated graph from the CDC, released at the end of last month, also shows the number of reported flu cases growing at a similar rate to the deadly 2017-2018 season.

The CDC also said on Friday that 34 states and Washington D.C., New York City and Puerto Rico are all experiencing “high flu activity.”

Key Points

• Influenza activity is high nationally with outpatient visits for ILI and the percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for influenza at levels similar to what have been seen at the peak of recent seasons. However, this week’s data may in part be influenced by changes in healthcare seeking behavior that can occur during the holidays.
• Influenza B/Victoria viruses are predominant nationally, which is unusual for this time of year. A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses are the next most common. A(H3N2) and B/Yamagata viruses are circulating at very low levels.
• CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 6.4 million flu illnesses, 55,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths from flu.
• It’s not too late to get vaccinated. Flu vaccination is always the best way to prevent flu and its potentially serious complications.
