Real Men, Real Investigative Journalism; Paul Brodeur: 5G/EMF/RF Father’s Day

By Patricia Burke

When Investigative Journalism “Left the Roadway,” “Danger That Public Policy Could Be Captive of a Scientific-Technological Elite”

Dwight Eisenhower cautioned, “The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” Eisenhower also noted, “… in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.”

The term “captive” brings to mind a hostage situation. This is not the case.

Historically, antitrust regulations are “regulations that encourage competition by limiting the market power of any particular firm. This often involves ensuring that mergers and acquisitions don’t overly concentrate market power or form monopolies, as well as breaking up firms that have become monopolies.”

Society is far beyond lack of competition for a firm in a particular industry. Like the Gilded Age, we are witnessing an era of concentration of wealth and abject poverty and inequality. The inequity is becoming more visible and contentious, for example, with billionaires who don’t pay taxes.

Currently, regulators and the media are the scientific-technological elite. In the same way that highway guardrails of the past are inadequate to protect against the increased height, speed, and momentum of large SUV vehicles prone to roll-overs, investigative journalism has bloody gone “all to pot” as the Brits would say. “Antitrust” rules are as inadequate as the 1996 telecom law and corrupted radio frequency exposure limits, both national and international.

The New York Times – Media Malarkey

In July of 2019, when the NYT published an industry-news-for-hire article by William Broad, “The 5G Health Hazard That Isn’t, How One Scientist And His Inaccurate Chart Led To Unwarranted Fears Of Wireless Technology,” it provided further confirmation that major media outlets are now part of the dangerous consolidation of power that Eisenhower cautioned about.

In contrast to historical coverage of Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson, where the news media played a role in making the public aware of misinformation associated with DDT and other ecocides, The New York Times is an active purveyor of EMF/RF/5G misinformation. One factor of concern is the “strategic partnership” that the NYT formed with Verizon to promote 5G. The majority shareholder of the Gray Lady, (as the NYT is called,) Carlos Slim, is a telecom mogul.

The problem is not only that the mainstream newspaper is serving up industry spin as news, but that so many members of the public believe that the NYT is a respected, trusted, higher authority. Thus, the public is unaware of the media’s role in manipulating attitudes and behaviors.

Equating the Benefits of the Internet with Wireless

The supposed benefits of “the internet” are being conflated with the benefits of a wireless paradigm that is inherently unsafe and insecure, and increasingly designed to alter the behavior of the populace towards industry objectives.

Tobacco industry strategy is once again in play. But the effects extend far beyond misleading consumers and decision makers about one product being purchased voluntarily by adult consumers. The ubiquitous, inescapable dragnet has been likened to a global spider web by author Vikas Nehru, encompassing all age groups, and every species.

Much of the wireless technology being deployed today is dual use, and covertly introduced without knowledge and consent of communities. The core values of citizens are being covertly manipulated regarding ecology, sustainability, racial equity, and accessibility of transportation and health care access, and even fire safety, to support the wireless narrative.

1976: “Exposure Standards Could Have Unfavorable Effects on Military and Industrial Functions”

Were there not evidence that nations are treating military and financial/industrial goals as the overriding priority, there might be little cause for concern. But in fact, the United States rejected the microwave science compiled by Soviet scientists decades ago, and still has not taken pause to evaluate the carnage. We are not at the beginning of the Age where tobacco science has taken control of the wireless narrative; it has been going on for decades.

There is a smoking gun that sources back to 1976.The U.S, Defense Intelligence Agency published an astounding report titled “Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation (Radiowaves and Microwaves) – Eurasian Communist Countries.” The 34-page report analyzes numerous Soviet and Eastern bloc research studies that demonstrate a wide range of adverse biological effects caused by exposure to radio frequency radiation and microwaves. In its Summary on page vii, the report states: “If the more advanced nations of the West are strict in the enforcement of stringent exposure standards, there could be unfavorable effects on industrial output and military functions.”

2020: Court “Promotes the Development and Growth of the Telecommunications Network”

In September of 2020, as reported by the Environmental Health Trust, another decision was made to favor economics over precaution, health, and the evolution of science. “A federal judge ruled in favor of the wireless industry to halt the city of Berkeley’s cell phone right to know law requiring retailers to warn customers about cellphone radiation. The decision by Judge Chen, terms the Berkeley law “overwarning” noting that the FCC must balance competing objectives of ensuring public health and safety and promoting the development and growth of the telecommunications network and related services.

In fact, section 704 of the Telecom Act of 1996 absolved the FCC of scrutiny for health and environmental impacts years earlier. “The language was codified in Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act, which prohibits environmental concerns (or health concerns by purported lack of substantial evidence) as a reason for denial of cell towers. This is despite growing awareness and scientific confirmation of both environmental and health effects from exposure to cell tower radiation and all radiofrequency wireless devices. ”

The FCC, as the “regulator” of telecom, has no health expertise, and plays an active role in denial of health and environmental impacts of RF. In July 0f 2020, the Children’s Health Defense (Robert Kennedy) and the Environmental Health Trust filed a lawsuit challenging the FCC for not reviewing its outdated, inapplicable 1996 guidelines, despite hundreds of comments from citizens, health experts, and scientists.

Investigative Journalism – When It Was Real, and Media Was Not Wedded to Political/Economic Pre-emption, Corporate Control, and Advertising Revenue; Paul Brodeur; Asbestos, Ozone Layer, Powerlines, Microwaves

Paul Brodeur’s website explains that in 1968 Paul Brodeur, a staff writer at The New Yorker,

…alerted the nation to the massive occupational and environmental health problem posed by asbestos, and has written four books on the subject. Among them are Expendable Americans (The Viking Press) and Outrageous Misconduct: The Asbestos Industry On Trial (Pantheon). The articles in The New Yorker that made up these books won a National Magazine Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Sidney Hillman Foundation Award, a journalism award from the Association of American Trial Lawyers, and the Silver Gavel Award of the American Bar Association.

Brodeur’s articles on the depletion of the ozone layer by man-made chemicals helped bring about an international agreement limiting the production of these chemicals. The articles won the Journalism Award of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and resulted in his being named to the United Nations Global 500 Roll of Honour for outstanding environmental achievements.

Other articles by the author helped bring about the removal of substances in household detergents that posed a health hazard to consumers and workers, warned that cancer-producing chemicals had become major contaminants in drinking water, and called attention to the carcinogenic and reproductive hazards caused by anesthetic gases to anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists, which resulted in scavenging them from operating rooms in hospitals across the nation.

Pioneering articles on the health hazards associated with exposure to microwave radiation won an Alicia Patterson Foundation Award, and were included in a book entitled, The Zapping Of America (W.W. Norton.) A series of pieces on the hazards of exposure to power-line electromagnetic fields won a public service award from the American Society of Professional Journalists. These pieces subsequently appeared in two books—Currents Of Death (Simon and Schuster) and The Great Power-Line Cover-Up (Little, Brown).

A reviewer of Paul Brodeur’s book wrote,

Written in 1977, even before Robert Becker’s mind boggling The Body Electric (1985), The Zapping of America documents the dangers of excess electromagnetic fields in the radio frequency (RF) and microwave bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. That American authorities have continued to ignore this pre1977 data and all that has accumulated in the intervening 36 years, is staggering.  Brodeur documents how the misleading “safe” exposure standards currently in use were based on minimal evidence, a lot of guess work and an “don’t tell me” attitude. Because the restriction of RF and microwave exposure would have inhibited military applications (like spying), the government and military conspired to hide research revealing dangers of excess exposure known as early as the 1940s. This gross irresponsibility on the part of government and industry has allowed the incredible proliferation of devices operating in the microwave band like cell phones, wifi and smart meters. While cell phones can be lifesaving in an emergency, there is no need for nearly the entire population of the US to have high powered mini computers (smart phones) plastered to their ears, to have even elementary schools blanketed with wifi, or to use wireless inside the home or office.

The privacy consequences are that we are allowing ourselves to be spied upon (Edward Snowden anyone?) by government and industry.

The health consequences of the excessive exposure will continue to mount, with rising rates of cancer, autism (don’t believe the naysayers on this one), dementia etc.  Educate yourself and others now, so you recognize another true cause of failing health, because you and your doctors will be long dead before the medical establishment accepts any of this. The world has become an impossible place, and perhaps the knowledgeable can only watch as millions are disabled from what Brodeur and others warned us about for so many years.

First Edition 1977The Zapping Of America: Microwaves, Their Deadly Risk, And The Cover Up

“…provided the first in-depth description of medical studies showing that exposure to microwave radiation poses a significant health hazard. By chance, the articles appeared in the magazine at the time a furor was erupting over the irradiation of the American Embassy in Moscow by the Soviets. Brodeur shows that officials of the State Department lied to American Foreign Service personnel stationed at the Embassy about the nature of the health threat posed to them by microwave radiation—a charge he later elaborates upon in his memoir entitled Secrets: A Writer in the Cold War.”

1993 – Currents of Death: The Great Power Line Cover-Up

“Controversy over the potential hazards of electromagnetism from neighborhood power lines has moved from the lab to the courts, as school districts and community groups mount protests or lawsuits against utility companies. New Yorker staff writer Brodeur convincingly argues that evidence exists that exposure to such radiation may cause cancer and other illnesses. Low-level microwave radiation poses another danger, he compellingly shows, as Cape Cod, Mass., residents discovered when an Air Force radar station built in the vicinity apparently led to abnormally high levels of cancer. Brodeur details and disputes scientific studies that claim such radiation is safe. He implicitly charges that a cover-up of the dangers has been engineered by industry, government, regulatory agencies and academia.”

This history does not have to keep repeating itself.  We need to hear, and not censor or ridicule, the voices of the Paul Brodeurs.
