Obama Wants Kids for Medical Experiments

Most of us have no objection when children are subjects of medical research if they can potentially benefit in a direct way.  That’s why so many people donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  But this past week the Obama Administration held hearings on something quite different — a proposal to inject healthy children with anthrax vaccine.

Hold it everyone.   Am I the only one sensing déjà vu?  Under the Third Reich, Dr. Josef Mengele performed countless C, many worse than our current example.  The world was shocked and developed national and international guidelines for ethical experimentation.  

In the United States, the guideline that targets experimentation on children is Federal Regulation 45 CFR 46, subpart D. It allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services to approve research, such as the anthrax proposal, after consultation with “a panel of experts in pertinent disciplines … and following opportunities for public review and comment.”

Uh, oh. You just missed your opportunity to comment.  To be in the know, you have to be a regular reader of The Federal Register.  The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, met on Monday and Tuesday at the University of Miami Hospital in Florida.

So what’s the official reason for the research?  To establish recommended preventative dosages of Bio Thrax to children, in case of an anthrax attack.  Never mind that no foreign power has ever attacked us that way, although there was an American doctor who mailed anthrax-laced envelopes, but he’s no longer alive.  Unofficially, there could be future multi-million dollar benefits for the manufacturer of Bio Thrax — Emergent BioSolutions.

You may be wondering about the side effects of the medicine. Well, if Emergent sold it over TV, the side effects would undoubtedly sound pleasant, accompanied with lots of happy, distracting pictures and cheery music.  According to the label, “Serious adverse events include those that result in death, hospitalization, permanent disability or are life-threatening.”

Mr. Obama, there is a much more reliable way to determine if testing the anthrax drug on healthy children is a good idea.  Just hold a family conference with Michelle and the girls.  If the four of you decide Sasha and Malia should not participate in the experiment, you can be sure it’s not a good idea for other people’s kids either.
