What are genital warts? Everything you need to know!

Genital warts are a prevalent sexually transmitted infection that is caused by the HPV or Human Papillomavirus. These are common both among males and females, but in some instances is dangerous for women as it can be a cause cervical cancer.

What are genital warts?

Soft outgrowth on genitals( both male and female) are termed as warts. It is a type of virus infection that is sexually transmitted.  It can cause severe pain, itching and extreme discomfort in common.

In the US alone every year 3 million cases of genitals warts are reported. It is more common in sexually active men, and women and protection against it is its treatment on time.

Symptom of genital warts you must not ignore

Genital warts are transmitted through contact with infected person. Although you might not see any visible signs for first few weeks of getting the infection later you might notice following symptoms

●    Outgrowth on skin, either skin coloured or black at first may seem like mole or an outgrowth

●    It can be either a cluster or a single wart

●    Looks likes a cauliflower

●    Feels smooth or slightly bumpy to touch

The warts are visible to naked eyes, and you can easily recognise it. In males, it can appear anywhere in or around penis, groin, scrotum or around anus or thighs. While in women it is common near virginal area or cervix.

Genital warts in the female are especially dangerous, it can cause bleeding, burning, itching and if untreated it can cause cervical cancer.  

Why warts need timely Treatment?

After self-diagnosis or being diagnosed by doctors, you must at once get the treatment for warts.

Warts that are visible can be easily treated, but the cause of warts that is the virus cannot be processed. Ones the HPV enters your bloodstream it becomes a part of your body, and there is no vaccination to cure it.

You might get treated, and warts may disappear, but there will be a number of warts outbreak throughout your life. That is why one should get the infection you have to get regular examinations and treatments.

What are the treatment/ procedures?

There are several procedures for treating genital warts. There are simple medications for a local application like Vidarox. While there are medical procedures like freezing, cauterization or surgical treatments for trap eating warts.

Your doctor will conduct a series of test to determine your condition and then suggest the most apt treatment plan. Some genital warts may quickly go away with the application of treatment creams while others may need different procedures.

The doctor might conduct a pap smear test to determine any chances of cervical cancer. This procedure can be repeated every six months to ensure you are not at a risk of cancer.

Things to remember

The worst part of HPV is that ones you caught it, it never leaves your body. You may get treated, but recurrence is frequent.

But there is a vaccination called the Cervarix that protects from cervical cancer. It’s precautionary to take this injection to prevent genital warts from causing cervix cancer.

It is essential that you talk to your partner about your condition if you happen to find an infection on you. Be open to clinical suggestions and cooperate with the doctor to prevent genital warts.
