Sinaloa is an avid example of narco-violence in Mexico.
It is not surprising that Sinaloa appears in the lists of the entities with the highest number of homicides in the country – 909 murders from January to August of 2019. In the case of the city of Culiacán , the situation is mostly discouraging.
On Thursday afternoon, Oct 16, 2019 the authorities of the Sinaloa capital experienced one of the most painful defeats in modern history, when they were overcome by hit men from the Sinaloa Cartel.
So surprising and so violent were the events that unfolded on Thursday in Culiacán, that MSM US media has been covering it, the usual European Sites ( BBC, Guardian, Telegraph, etc) and the New York Times characterized them as “Scenes from a Bad Netflix Show”.
The Washington Examiner headline: “The Cartel is in Charge Here”; Narcos Overpower Authorities in Massive Show of Force. The NYT also calls Thursday, Oct 16 “the most significant show of public brutality since the disappearance of “The 43″ student teachers at Iguala. ( may I emphasize “public” )
Culiacán lived one of the most infernal days after the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán, “El Ratón”
The confusion about what happened is total. In the first hours, the official version released by the Ministry of Citizen Security and Protection detailed that, while thirty members of the National Guard conducted a routine patrol in the Tres Ríos area, they were attacked from a home.
Although the gunmen overcame them in armament, the agents repelled the attack and took control of the property, where there were four people, including the son of Chapo Guzmán and alleged operator of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ovidio Guzmán, aka “El Ratón”.
It was then that several groups surrounded the house and carried out violent actions against the citizens to avoid their detention.
Although a photo allegedly of Guzmán’s arrest began to circulate, the head of the agency, Alfonso Durazo, said he agreed to release the alleged hitman to avoid damage to the population of Culiacán, which has 800,000 inhabitants.

The false positives in Culiacán:
24 hours after the attack, Durazo explained that when he arrived at the battlefield he learned about the situation. In a press conference, the head said that the arrest had not been carried out after a patrol in the area, but was an operation “precipitated” by elements of the Ministerial Police, which had a search warrant to a home from the Tres Ríos area, and where Ovidio Guzmán was located.
“In an effort to obtain positive results, (the Ministerial Police) acted in a precipitous manner with poor planning, as well as lack of foresight about the possible consequences,” said National Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval.
After the arrest of the capo, alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel responded with aggressions and a crossfire, with civil society as the main victim who experienced moments to hours of panic.
Upon noticing the high rate of widespread violence that occurred, the security cabinet decided to end the operation, which resulted in the death of a civilian, an element of the National Guard, an inmate of Aguaruto and 5 aggressors.
“The group did not anticipate what would happen. He rushed, did not plan the risks or the withdrawal with the target,” insisted General Cresencio Sandoval.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador , justified the release of Ovidio Guzmán López, son of “El Chapo” Guzmán, after being captured on Thursday in Culiacán, Sinaloa.
“ They made decisions that I endorse, that I support, because the situation became very difficult and many citizens, many people, many human beings were at risk and it was decided to protect people’s lives and I agreed with that, because it’s about massacres. The capture of a criminal cannot be worth more than the life of the people, ” he said from Oaxaca after the Security Cabinet’s decision to release the Chapito after the shootings unleashed by gunmen in the city.
