Germany owes Greece €162 billion in WWII reparations

Greek government allegedly has finally collected all leads, evidence and legal arguments regarding the reparations from World War I and II Germany should pay in debts. A Finance Ministry committee assigned to investigate the matter got together the total amount of 162 billion euro in outstanding World War II debts Germany ought to pay back to Greece.

Newspaper To Vima claims to have seen the findings and reports that the experts found that Germany should pay Greece 108 billion euros for damage to infrastructure and 54 billion euros for a loan that the Nazi occupation forces obliged Greece to take in order to pay Berlin during the war.

The reparations are equivalent to about 80 percent of Greek gross domestic product.

According to To Vima, the research concluded on March 8th 2013 after two and a half months of investigation. the material collected consists of WWI and WWII compensations sought by individuals as well as of war reparations that were not paid.

80-pages findings -109 archive files

93% of the cases refers to reparations for damages during WWI – when Greece was neutral

91% refers to hostage taking and deaths during WWII

90% in total refers to individual cases

Law 4781/1961: agreement between Greece and Germany on the compensation of individuals who suffered damages from National-socialism.

Finding: Only 50%, i.e. 115 million Deutsche Marks – of the reparations claims was given. The rest 100 million DM was never handed out.
Greek ‘loans’ to Nazi occupators

According to Bank of Greece, Athens borrowed to German occupation forces

1,617,781,093,648,819 Drachmas to German Nazi occupation forces and

220,479,188,480 Drachmas to Italian fascist regime during the first years of WWI.

According to the “loan” agreements of March and December 1942 these amounts should be returned to Greece after the end of the war. The loans were never paid back neither by Germany, nor by Italy.

Right after the war, Bank of Greece estimated that the total amount was equivalent to 4.5 million golden British Pound

German magazine Der Spiegel has picked up the report saying ‘there could be soon anger between Greece and Germany”. Especially the moment Athens would officially publish the findings report.

Much to my knowledge, Berlin has repeatedly claimed that all compensation claims were satisfied with the agreement of 1961. However, it comes out 1) that agreement referred to individual claims, not to state loan and 2) even this 1961-compensations were not fully paid.

The Great Famine was a period of mass starvation during the Axis occupation of Greece, during World War II (1941–1944). The local population suffered greatly during this period, while the Axis Powers initiated a policy of large scale plunder. Moreover, requisitions together with the Allied blockade of Greece, the ruined state of the country’s infrastructure and the emergence of a powerful and well-connected black market, resulted in the Great Famine, with the mortality rate reaching a peak during the winter of 1941–1942.

During the Great Famine my family lost two grannies and an aunt. I will refrain from demanding compensation, if Berlin can guarantee me keeping alive the parents during the modern economic war Germany staged in the name of the Euro and the banks.
