Two missing after torrential rains hit Rhodes (video)

Two people are missing on the island of Rhodes, when their car was swept away during a strong thunderstorm  that hit the island on Friday. The two missing persons are a man, 50, and a woman, 27. The third passenger of the car was found safe. According to latest media reports and local authorities, the two missing persons are teachers and that they had left the village of Kremasti, near the airport, to drive to the city. Local authorities speak of “controversial information” about the whereabouts of the missing persons. It seems that there is some chaotic situation on the island right now, with the fire brigades rushing to give aid to more than 130 phone calls for venting water, police and local authorities trying to record rescues and damages.

The thunderstorm that hit the island on Friday afternoon lasted some two hours and caused a lot of damage.

The area most hit is Ialysos, where the river of the same name swell and found a way out through the main road of the village.

Dirt , debris , reeds and water rushed through the village, immobilizing many vehicles in the middle of the road, flooding shops and homes.

Several vehicles turned over, while there was reportedly some pile up of cars and fallen trees.

Drivers in panic got off their cars and some managed to rescue themselves by swimming.

Authorities call citizens to stay at home.

Last time Ialysos river was overflown it was 30 years ago.
