Fear for Iranians as economic lifeline of JCPOA is severed by U.S. withdrawal

With the announcement on Tuesday that the United States was withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will have a broad impact on the Iranian people. One of the biggest impacts is going to be economically. The Iranian regime sold the idea of the JCPOA to the Iranian people as a means to give their economy a much-needed boost, but now the economic lifeline that it was supposed to be appears to be over.

As the U.S. begins to reimpose the sanctions that were lifted as part of the JCPOA, and President Trump authorizes the U.S. Treasury Department to impose even more sanctions against individuals and organizations within Iran, it is clear that the Iranian economy is about to take yet another hit. Plus, European companies find themselves in the position of not being able to move forward with investment in Iran, for fear that they will lose access to the U.S. banking system.

To be fair, the JCPOA did not provide the economic lift that most Iranians anticipated. Funds that were released as part of the deal were quickly spent on military objectives of the regime. Additionally, the mismanagement of the environment and natural resources of the country have made the latest five-year drought a crushing economic blow.

The Iranian people have started fighting back against the regime, calling them to account for the mismanaging of the resources and wealth of the Iranian people. Protests continue throughout the country, as individuals attempt to collect their paychecks and pensions, many of which are months behind.

There have also been issues with the Iranian Central Bank and its inability to meet the requirements to join the international banking community. Plus, the Iranian currency is struggling as well.

While there are short-term concerns for the Iranian regime when it comes to the JCPOA, the bigger long-term issue is the impact on the Iranian regime leadership, which is already struggling with increasing dissatisfaction over the economy and the lack of human rights. The suppressive measures of the regime could be coming back to haunt them. Average Iranians, however, see it as a reason for the government to clamp down even more to stop protests and demonstrations, further increasing the suppressive efforts of the mullahs.

Simply put, the JCPOA was never going to be the savior that the Iranian people were told it would be. Deep-rooted problems, including uncompetitive investment laws, corruption, and dual nationals facing arrest from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other security forces, have dampened the desire of foreign companies to do business in Iran.

Plus, the American sanctions that remained in place outside of the agreement, prevented many financial transactions, limiting Iran’s access to credit and foreign investments. Iran’s every move going forward is under the microscope of Israel and the United States, which could start a military conflict that Iran cannot truly afford.

“This is a big failure for Mr. Rouhani – America has cheated on him by not keeping its promises,” said Jalal Jalalizadeh, a former member of the Iranian parliament. “But in the end, we are all losers. Now it is clear that only direct and open talks with the United States can ever solve this.”

However, there is another option for the Iranian people. The Iranian resistance offers a democratic alternative, one that could be the way forward for the Iranian people. On June 30, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its supporters will hold their annual meeting in Paris. This group offers the international community another way of advancing with Iran, but one that could bring real stability to the region.

“Eradicating the clerical regime’s nuclear and terrorism threats means getting rid of the regime in its entirety. A regime based on the principle of velayat-e faqih (absolute rule of the clergy) cannot exist without terrorism, suppression, and weapons of mass destruction,” said Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the NCRI. “As the nationwide uprising in December and January demonstrated, the Iranian people want to be liberated from religious oppression and despotism. Democratic change in Iran is inevitable and a free Iran is within reach. The end of religious dictatorship in Iran is a requisite for regional peace, democracy, security, and stability. This is the only way to end war and crisis in the region and avert a larger war.”

Rajavi also called on the United Nations Security Council to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its crimes against the Iranian people, including the mass execution of political prisoners in 1988. She also acknowledged that the end of the JCPOA would mean the end of appeasing the regime through the lifting of sanctions and other payments, funds that the NCRI has repeatedly warned the international community are funding Iran’s military objectives throughout the region, particularly in Syria.

The NCRI has long been a flag-bearer for a non-nuclear Iran and encouraged the support of the international community for the Iranian people’s attempts to rid Iran of the mullahs and their regime.
