DEBKAfile was founded by a team of journalists in June 2000 as an independent Internet Web site, providing an intelligence and security news service. October 21, 2016, 11:30 AM (IDT)
On the fifth day of the Iraqi and Kurdish offensive in Mosul, scores of Islamic State fighters and suicide bombers Friday morning attacked four police stations, Kurdish security offices in the oil city of Kirkuk,175 km away and a power station to the north. They also stromed residential neighborhoods. Government officials later said that Kurdish security forces had largely regained control of the city, but residents reported continuing clashes in at least two areas, with an unknown number of dead and injured.
ISIS said in a statement it had seized “half the city” and had also attacked the Dubiz power plant, killing all the security forces inside, but the claims were not possible to verify.
Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
