A 39-second YouTube clip of a young man who claims to be the son of Kim Jong-nam, the recently-assassinated half-brother of North Korea's leader, was posted online on Tuesday.
The young man who identifies himself as Kim Han-Sol says in English that “My father has been killed a few days ago,” adding “I'm currently with my mother and my sister.” Kim Han-sol is said to have spent most of his life outside North Korea, including in France, Bosnia and Macau.
In South Korea, National Intelligence Service and Unification Ministry officials were quoted as saying that the young man in the video was indeed Kim Jong-nam's son.
A previously-unknown group that posted the video claimed on its website that it relocated members of the murdered man's family after receiving an emergency request from them, but said it would not disclose their current location or any other details.
Kim Jong-nam was killed on February 13 at Kuala Lumpur's international airport by two women who, according to Malaysia's police, were recruited by several North Koreans to smear a deadly toxin on him. Kim died shortly after the attack.
Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
