New US travel ban guidelines to go into effect

Starting Thursday, citizens of Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Syria and Somalia are barred from entering the US for 90 days unless they can prove a close family relationship with a person residing in the country, or a relationship with an American entity such as a business or an educational institution. Nationals of the six countries are said to be eligible for visas if they a sibling, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, parent or spouse residing in the country. Also, refugees are not allowed to enter the US for 120 days regardless of their country of origin.
The new guidelines were sent to US diplomatic missions around the world on Wednesday. However, as of late in the day, federal agencies such as the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security had yet to announce directives on the guidelines, sparking uncertanty as to how they will be implemented.
On Monday, the Supreme Court approved the travel ban “with respect to foreign nationals who lack any bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States”.
