German, French and Italian leaders jointly announced Friday that the Paris Climate Accord could not be renegotiated as US President Donald Trump demanded when he announced the US withdrawal. They were joined by other world leaders in slamming Trump’s decision, which broke away from the accord’s endorsement by nearly 200 nations. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and top EU officials in Brussels have drafted a joint statement in the same spirit of condemnation.
Trump said Friday that the US was getting out of the Paris accord because it would undermine the US economy, cost jobs, weaken America’s sovereignty and put the country at a permanent disadvantage to other countries of the world. “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,” he said. But Pittsburgh’s mayor, Democrat Bill Peduto, shot back on Twitter that his city actually embraced the Paris accord.
