Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made it clear to President Emmanuel Macron when they met in Paris Sunday that Israel is “totally opposed” to the ceasefire plan in Syria. He was referring to the plan going forward since the July 7 meeting in Hamburg between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Iran is not only sending advisers to Syria, an “Israeli official” added, but seeks to send large-scale military forces to Syria to establish an airbase for Iranian aircraft and a naval base for Iran’s navy. “This already changes the picture in the region from what it has been up to now,” he said.

After their meeting at the Elysée Palace, President Macron said in a joint statement with the prime minister: “I share Israel’s concerns about Hizballah’s activity in south Lebanon and about the arms the group has. I want to try and promote a diplomatic move to reduce the severity of this threat.”

Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
