Last week, a “boots on the ground” representative from The Leadership Institute, David Scarpelli, and myself decided to do some recruiting for a Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) chapter in the process of foundation at Front Range Community College (FRCC) in Westminster, Colorado. This is the largest FRCC campus, and on it there is a lot going on. We were next to two other organizations–one health and fitness club and the other a nursing club–who were each marketing for their own cause.

We were overall very successful. We had dozens of students sign on as prospective members of the chapter, and plenty more give us their contact information for future reference. The school faculty was surprisingly very helpful; even providing us with a table, chairs, and one of the best spots for recruiting on the campus. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by it all.

The conversations we had were also quite intriguing. Plenty of people were interested in what we had to say. People from all walks of life; from veterans to young and curious freshmen to even a former Libertarian political candidate. There were plenty of disagreements to be had, but most of them were in a relatively respectful way. One source of incredible frustration I had, though, was having to consistently debunk the misconception that we’re all anarchists because of the fact that we’re critiquing and questioning the authority of the government and the role they should play in our personal lives. People tend to have a false dichotomy perspective of politics anyways, but especially regarding those of us that fall somewhere on the spectrum of libertarianism.

The one thing we’re lacking is a faculty advisor. I’m currently waiting to hear back from a political science professor who seems excited about the opportunity. We’re just one step away! The future looks promising for the presence of YAL at FRCC-Westminster.
