UNCW Free Speech Day

Today myself, my VP Ryan, Savannah, and Brittany walked around the UNCW campus clipboarding and speaking to students about freedom of speech and how our campus policy impedes their right to assemble and protest in a public forum. UNCW has a strange policy regarding free speech zones, which states that only officially recognized student organizations can rent free speech zones, which is a bit of a paradox, as well as hand out fliers and speak.

Interestingly enough, as we were walking by, we saw a group of students who were exercising their rights be shut down by a school administrator. However, we convinced them to stay and continue their protest, despite the university’s policy. We ourselves did not run into any difficulty, though we did encounter an employee of campus police who was very respectful and explained the university’s side of the argument, even if we disagreed with the policy. Hopefully in the coming weeks, we will be able to get the policy in question repealed.
