The University of Mary Washington chapter just hosted our first activism event since forming, and it was more exciting than we could have hoped! We had originally scheduled to host a YALoween event on Thursday, October 27th, but sadly, we got rained out and had to reschedule. It was a happy accident, though. Because of the rain, we were able to move the event to the following Monday – actual Halloween – and the costume element doubled the motivation for students to get involved in the conversation, in the spirit of Halloween (Special thanks to the western couple sporting their “open carry”).

Overall, students tended to be interested in having a dialogue about our tombstones, which were focused on the first and second Amendments, and on due process. It went off without a bit of conflict, which was reassuring for us to learn that the students at UMW as a whole still value free speech as a means to come to understanding with one another.

During the event, we were able to reach out to a ton of new students, doubling our e-mail list in the process. For a brand new chapter, I don’t think it could have gone much better. YALoween got our students excited to engage in conversation on the issues, and made our chapter members already pumped to plan our next event!
