As a student on an especially hostile campus (to libertarian and conservative ideologies) I knew that it was going to be an interesting experience recruiting. Luckily, I didn't experience any disruptions. I found starting conversations on the drug war and criminal justice reform to be a very effective way of engaging people who seemed otherwise uninterested or unmotivated. The “What to Say to Police” cards were a huge hit! I had many people reaching for them.
I tabled in front of the cafeteria on campus from 4-7, and by 6:30 had filled up a sheet and began to work on another. I consider this a tremendous success considering the small campus size and my lack of resources. While the included items in the recruitment kit were great, I think I could benefit from a free-standing trifold next time and will also be working on getting additional literature to distribute to interested individuals.
I plan to table multiple times before our first meeting on March 2nd and I'll be posting a report on our recruitment drive as a whole shortly after.
