New FDA Rules on E-Cigarettes Will Limit Adult Smokers' Access to Safer Alternatives

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced new regulations restricting the sale of flavored e-cigarettes. The new rules would restrict sales at convenience stores and gas stations and limit the number of flavors available in stores. 

CEI senior fellow Michelle Minton said: 

“The FDA’s announcement makes it clear that the goal of protecting adolescents from initiating nicotine-use they are willing to sacrifice the lives of adult smokers.  

“In addition to making it harder for adults to switch to e-cigarettes, which the FDA admits are far safer than smoking, the restrictions will have other unintended consequences. Rather than keeping adolescents away from nicotine, the FDA’s new rules will likely push adolescents to acquire e-cigarettes through illicit channels or simply use combustible cigarettes.”
