New CEI Video Urges Americans to Show Their Support for Faster Dishwashers

The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) today released a new video making the case for a new Department of Energy (DOE) regulation allowing faster dishwashers and encouraging citizens to submit comments on the proposed rule ahead of the October 16, 2019 deadline.

DOE proposed a new rule, in response to a March 2018 CEI petition, which would allow for a new class of dishwashers that would need only an hour to finish a cycle. This is in contrast to today’s dishwashers, which can take more than two hours due to the government’s so-called efficiency regulations. According to a GE Appliances survey of 11,000 dishwasher owners, slow cycle time is one of the four biggest sources of dissatisfaction for consumers. Last year, thousands of consumers sent comments to DOE in support of CEI’s petition.

Why Dishwashers Have Gotten Crappier

Are you tired of slow dishwashers? Sick of washing your dishes by hand because you can’t wait?  Waiting and waiting, hour after hour… ENOUGH!  Introducing your grandparents’ dishwasher!  It washes your dishes in half the time! This offer is not available in stores or anywhere in the United States thanks to government efficiency standards.

It’s hard to believe, but it used to take only an hour to get a full load of dishes washed and dried in your dishwasher. Today, thanks to so-called government “efficiency” regulations, the average time is two and a half hours, and many people think modern dishwashers are much worse at cleaning and drying as well.

Dishwashers have gotten crappier.

It all began in 1987, when Congress directed the Department of Energy to issue efficiency standards for appliances. Over the years the agency’s rules have gotten tighter and more complicated.  In some cases they may have improved things, but at other times they’ve messed things up. 

Slow dishwashers are a royal pain. A survey of 11,000 dishwasher owners showed that cycle time is one of the four biggest sources of dissatisfaction.

This is just another example of bureaucrats trying to overregulate American industry. If they can screw up your dishwasher, imagine what they could do to your healthcare…? Okay, bad example.  

But If high-efficiency dishwashers are so great, then we don’t need laws forcing us to buy them.  Why not let consumers decide for themselves?

Fortunately, the Department of Energy can create a new category of dishwashers that work as fast as the old ones. This wouldn’t eliminate today’s high-efficiency models, but it would give consumers the freedom to choose what kind of dishwasher they want. And who doesn’t like choice?
