Yemen’s Rapid Population Growth Creating Problems

Bud Conrad:  The situation in Yemen is spiraling out of control, and it’s putting investor complacency to the test.

The Middle East is no stranger to conflict. More often than not, religious tensions fuel violence in this region of the globe. That’s true once again, but don’t underestimate the role unfavorable demographics can play.

Yemen’s population has been exploding for decades, and its economy can barely keep up. Water supplies are strained, and unemployment is alarmingly high.

Job prospects are especially grim for the nation’s youth, which is a huge problem since 46% of Yemen’s population is under age 15. In other words, the ingredients for social unrest are hot on the grill.

Oil-rich Saudi Arabia is rightly concerned about its unstable neighbor to the south. Unfortunately, military intervention won’t bring hope to Yemen’s disgruntled youth. It only threatens to turn up the heat.
