Immersed in Polluted waters for a long period Pygmy Killer Whale Shot Dead

MALOLOS City — A sick female dolphin who got astray into a river stream in the coastal village of Pamarawan near the mouth of Manila Bay here last Friday was shot dead on orders of a marine biologist after discovering that it was infected with a transmittable disease.
Dr. Lemuel Aragones, a marine biologist and a professor at UP Diliman, said the dolphin was very thin and very sick.
He said the dolphin — an adult female pygmy killer whale type — has many wounds and was also infected with a transmittable disease that could threaten other dolphins and this prompted authorities to kill it through “mercy killing” via a single gunshot to the head.
After the mercy killing, marine biologists poured gasoline and burned it. The sick dolphin was found by a fisherman who informed village officials and called the marine experts.
Aragones said the dolphin could have been immersed into polluted waters for a long period of time and got sick. He said that this is a clear sign of the alarming effect of pollution affecting the country’s coastlines.
Aragones said there are three standard procedures on stray dolphins. First, it should be brought back into the sea; second, it should be given medical treatment and third, it should be killed (mercy killing) if it is very sick and contaminated with transmittable disease.
