A pygmy sperm whale that washed up near the pygmy blue on Monday had also been buried at the beach. “This whale was only 3m long, so it was a lot easier to work with.”
Cause of whale’s death shrouded in mystery
Just what caused a huge whale to die on a South Taranaki beach will probably never be known, according to Department of Conservation scientists.

The 22.5m-long pygmy blue whale was found dead on Waiinu Beach in the weekend and was buried at the beach on Monday.
Jim Campbell from the Department of Conservation (DoC) said the cause of the 80-tonne whale’s death could only be determined by a detailed examination.
“We would have to do things like delve into its stomach contents. It did look quite thin, so it might have been ill – whales, just like humans, can become ill.”
Mr Campbell said photos of the whale would be sent to whale experts at Te Papa, and DNA samples from the whale’s skin and blubber would go to whale experts at AUT. Mr Campbell said he was “95 per cent certain” the whale was a pygmy blue, a small subspecies of the blue whale. “To the best of my knowledge, it’s the first time a baleen whale has ever been washed up on this coast.”
Mr Campbell said it was not known how old the whale was or what gender it was. He said local iwi Nga Rauru worked with DoC to help bury the whale. While jawbones are sometimes taken by iwi from dead whales, Nga Rauru have decided this whale should be buried whole.
