Klamath, Calif. — The gray whale that has captivated California’s North Coast for nearly two months was found dead Tuesday morning on a Klamath River sandbar.

Jim Milbury with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association Fishery Services told Your California she died around 4:30 a.m.

Scientists from a variety of organizations, including Humboldt State University and U.C. Davis had been studying the cow, even taking breath samples to help determine her overall health.

Last month, biologists used killer whale sounds to encourage the whale to head back out to sea. Killer whales are natural predators for the grays, so scientists hoped the sounds would convince her that the river is no longer a desirable place to be.

The 45-foot gray and her calf swam up the Klamath in late June—diverting from their migratory path to Alaska from the Baja California breeding grounds. The calf swam back out to sea on July 23, and now only the cow remains.

Scientists worried she would not get enough food in the river and would get stuck during its summer recession. They were also worried about her skin’s long-term exposure to fresh water.

The whale reached celebrity status as she was clearly visible from the Highway 101 bridge crossing the river.
