Mehmood Khan, the owner of the Charai Fishery, said that the whale shark was spotted unconscious ten days ago, 150kms away from the fishery.

Two cranes were called in to fish the dead whale shark out of the water, which was approximately 40 to 50-feet long and six-feet wide. Both cranes failed to pull out the fish and were sent back as at least three more cranes were required to carry out the task.

Later, more cranes, capable of lifting heavier weights, were called in, which successfully pulled the fish out after several hours of continued efforts.

The dead fish remained the focus of interest for the media and the curious onlookers during the whole process.

The fishermen of the area were earlier speculating that the fish was a Black Shark.

Karachi

Just a day after being in the limelight for having hauled a mammoth whale shark to the shores of the city and striking a monetary deal over the carcass with poultry feed merchants, the fishermen who had been the protagonists in the story saw the state machinery intervene and deny them their catch of a lifetime.

The twist to the tale came in the shape of the Karachi Fish Harbour Authority (KFHA) seizing the carcass of the whale shark lying at the harbour on Wednesday, snapping the deal between the fishermen and the feed merchants.

The director of the KFHA, Abdul Ghani Jokhio, confirmed to The News the seizure of the carcass and the cancelling of the deal which could have made the fishermen Rs170,000 richer. “We will definitely compensate the fishermen who suffered the loss, though they had done an illegal act in the first place by bringing the marine mammal, an endangered specie, onto the harbour and selling it,” he added.

Now marine scientists are likely to conduct a research to ascertain the cause of death of the 11-meter-long whale shark. “We have written letters to the PCSIR, the National Institute of Oceanography and the Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology at the University of Karachi to send their experts to ascertain its cause of death,” Jokhio said.

Moreover, a team of marine experts from Britain had also requested the authority to …

Pakistani man wages cat-and-mouse battle with police over giant whale shark

… But police cracked down Thursday, saying fishery authorities had decided people should be allowed to see the shark for free. Khan resisted and hid his prize attraction under the giant piece of green cloth he had previously used as a tent.

The move sparked a comic game of cat and mouse between Khan and the police. They would order him to remove the cover, which he would do briefly before replacing it. Then the cycle would start over again.

“We are told to protect and facilitate the people to see this rare fish, but this man is not allowing this,” said police inspector Mohammad Aslam at the scene.

Khan countered by saying he paid 200,000 rupees for it. “To recover my cost I am charging just 20 rupees per ticket, but the forsaken fishery authorities have deprived me of this fortune,” he said. …
