Lizards' Fate Mixed; Sundarbans in Trouble; White-Nose Syndrome Keeps Killing Bats

Winners and losers for lizards with climate change. In the largest study of its kind, Australian scientists have examined how the cold-blooded creatures of the world will cope as their environment warms.

The Sundarbans in big trouble. The Sundarbans–the world’s largest mangrove forest in Bangladesh and India–is now facing a major environmental disaster, after a vessel carrying over 350,000 liters of furnace oil capsized in Sela River. The spill particularly jeopardises a dolphin sanctuary, the local food chain and the entire local ecology.

‘Tis the season for white-nose syndrome in bats. A large survey shows that white-nose syndrome, the fungal disease Pseudogymnoascus destructans that affects bats, is most lethal in the winter during their hibernation. The findings give researchers a clue as to why white-nose syndrome might be hitting U.S. bat populations so hard.
