Iran Says Will Allow Russian Bombers Flight for Anti-Terrorism Operations in
Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC)
Ali Shamkhani said Tehran will continue to allow the Russian fighter jets to
use its airspace for military operations against the terrorists in Syria.

“Their (the Russians’) use of Iran’s airspace continues because we have a
fully strategic cooperation with Russia,” Shamkhani told FNA on Saturday.

Stressing that Iran is ready for any cooperation with Russia on Syria, he
said the Russian fighters’ flights through Iran’s airspace is carried out
after complicated planning and coordination with officials in Tehran.

Shamkhani also explained that a number of Russian bombers have recently
flown through Iran’s airspace, but have not done any refueling operations.

Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan said in November that Tehran could
allow Russia’s use of the Noje Airbase in Hamadan for the aerial campaign
against terrorists in Syria if the situation demanded it.

If the situation and conditions (in Syria) demand to provide the support, we
will do this job,” General Dehqan said.

In mid-August, Iran already allowed Russian jets to operate from a base in
the Hamadan province. The jets returned to Russia a week later, after
completing their counterterrorism mission, which targeted the terrorists in
Syria.

The use of the Hamadan airfield by the Russian aviation in August was the
first time when Iranian territory had been used by foreign military forces
since 1946.

The Russian Aerospace Forces may need to use the Hamadan airbase if the
Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrying cruiser deployed to the Mediterranean is
far from the Syrian coast and cannot be used for airstrikes, said Viktor
Ozerov, head of the Defense and Security Committee of the upper house of the
Russian parliament.
