2018 Chevrolet Silverado (2019 MY)

Revealed in 2012, the current generation of the Silverado remains one of the better trucks on the US market. However, even though its build quality and capabilities are among the best in its class, it can’t really compete with its rivals when it comes to fuel efficiency or even safety. In order to solve those issues a new model is expected to be released with the upcoming 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. According to some sources, it could come early in 2018 as 2019 MY, but this was not officially confirmed.The new truck has already been spied a few times in the wild and we do have some really interesting reports about it.

The platform

As expected, the new model is going to be built on an entirely new chassis. This is going to be a high strength steel platform on which a steel cab will be installed. However, all the body panels as well as the bed are expected to be made out of aluminum. This should allow GM to save weight and give the truck a higher payload than otherwise. This shouldn’t increase the cost much though and the Silverado is still expected to retain the same great NVH levels as before.

The looks

The interior of the new truck hasn’t been seen so far. Even so, most sources suggest GM will adopt a more refined design scheme for the truck’s cabin. Expect it to be more similar to their latest premium crossovers which should allow it to stand out over its rivals. The exterior on the other hand has been spied a few times now. Even though the trucks were heavily camouflaged, it seems the new model is slightly lower than before. Also, the front and rear fenders seem wider which could suggest a wider track. In the front we can clearly see Chevrolet’s corporate grille but the headlights seem to have been split into individual low and high beams which should give it a really unique look.

What about its engines

Up until a few weeks ago most of us expected the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado to get roughly the same engines as before. It seems that this is not the case. In fact a diesel version of the 1500 Silverado has been spied and we couldn’t be more excited about it. This prototype basically confirms that GM is in for the long haul and they are ready to take the competition head on. Even though it may seem like GM doesn’t have a suitable diesel, this is not the case. In fact most rumors suggest that GM could use a 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-six which they are developing in cooperation with Navistar. This is expected to provide a similar amount of power to its rivals while offering better fuel consumption.
