Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin tested its New Shepard rocket capsule escape mechanism in the West Texas desert Wednesday. The booster was not supposed to survive the test as the capsule’s escape rockets would slam the booster with some 70,000 pounds of force in its parting from the booster. But sometimes, things just don’t work out how you expect.
This video shows how the capsule escape system is supposed to work. It appears it can be initiated either manually or automatically in event of an anomaly.
And, with that said, here is how the test actually went down.
It seems to me that the capsule did at least 1 flip as it escaped the booster. Still, if everyone was strapped down, it seems like the crew would have a chance to survive. And not only did the booster not disintegrate or explode, but landed itself just as pretty as you please. Pretty sweet stuff I think.
