The following is a story, one of many, where schools, often with the assistance of other officials such as the police, abuse kids with moronic zero tolerance policies. It takes place in the People’s State of NJ.
High School Senior Frank Harvey undertook an assignment approved by his teacher. The assignment? To make the case against gun control. As part of his argument Frank gave examples of people using guns to defend themselves, and contested the notion of gun free zones, in part, using cartoons. Frank’s work was captured in a Power Point presentation. which was seen by another student. Apparently being “triggered” by the whole gun thingy thing, Frank was reported to the school. Later that same day he was visited by the police. Finally Frank was suspended from school, and told he had to undergo five hours of psychological testing before he could return. The Blaze Article
So Frank was pretty much screwed by the school, especially since his teacher suddenly could not remember authorizing his assignment. Id. Now bear in mind that all this hoopla took place over a frickin Power Point presentation. No real guns were involved. No threats were made. But it is at this point that this tale takes a different path from what ordinarily would happen; namely that Frank would bow to the school’s pressure, get his psych testing, and go on with life. That does not happen. Rather, and refreshingly, Frank’s Mom has refused to make him be psychologically evaluated saying:
“I am not taking him for a psychological evaluation because this teacher is lying and won’t own up to what she did.” Id.
Frank will complete HS via the GED program. Id. And good for him, because had he been psychologically tested that would go on his record and could quite possibly, in these times, keep him from ever owing a gun.
