Every so often articles like this one come up, where western women are raped in Islamic countries, and are then arrested and tried for having sex outside of marriage. The latest such case is that of Brit Zara-Jayne Moisey, 25, who was raped by two British men. That’s bad enough. But Zara-Jane then made an awful situation horrific by making the mistake of reporting the rape to the police.
Zara-Jayne Moisey, 25, told police in the United Arab Emirates she was violently raped by two British men in the city last month.
But instead of being treated as a victim, Zara, from Widnes, who is single after splitting from her husband, was reportedly locked up on suspicion of extra-marital sex and later charged with the offence.
Her passport has been confiscated and she now faces a trial, claim her family and friends.
For the life of me I do not understand why any western woman, or any woman for that matter, would ever willingly set foot in an Islamic nation. Because if they encounter a situation such as Zara-Jayne’s, they can and will frequently be arrested and they can and often do face punishment ranging from being beaten or caned, to death by stoning or hanging. In the lexicon of Islamic nations which severely punish sex outside of marriage, whether or not forcible or non-consensual, Dubai is not an exception. It is the norm. And for any woman with a shred of common sense, visiting there, as with all other Islamic nations, should be avoided at all costs.
Ms. Moisey is, according to the article, currently out of jail on bail. Her family is not wealthy, and are trying to raise money for her defense. Personally, I’d rather see their funds go toward hiring some ex-SF types to get her out of that hell-hole sad excuse of a country. I know that’s a probably a bit too much of a Ross Perot-ish action novel fantasy. But I do hope something like that happens. Because honestly, this woman isn’t rich, famous or well connected, and thus her government likely won’t do much for her, there won’t be an international outcry for her release, and her chances of defending herself in an Islamic court that views a woman’s testimony as half that of a man are piss poor at best. So, I hope she can get out while she can. A pipe dream, I know. But if that happened, the real question then is: What next? If she did get out of Dubai “illegally,” would the British government send her back? Or would it consider her being prosecuted for having sex because of being raped enough of a violation of her human rights to tell Dubai to pack sand. And wouldn’t that truly suck? To actually escape Dubai only to be betrayed by your own Islamophilic government.
