Ken Holtzman was born on this day in 1945.
At 19, he made his debut with the Chicago Cubs and became one of the best lefties in the National League. He was 80-81 with a 3.76 ERA over 9 seasons in Chicago. The Cubs did not have a lot of winning seasons back then.
In 1972, Ken joined the Oakland A’s and was a key part of that amazing team that won 3 consecutive World Series titles. He was 77-55 with a 2.92 ERA for the A’s!
In the post season, Holtzman was superb with the A’s: 6-4 with a 2.30 ERA.
Overall, he won 174, completed 129 and 31 shutouts.
