(Before It's News)

Call it a final, desperate run – but illegal immigrants made a mass run across the U.S. border in the lead-up to the presidential election, apparently trying to get across before Donald Trump could be elected.

The Department of Homeland Security said this week that during the month of October, 46,145 illegals were apprehended at the border – and that’s just the number caught.

The October statistic is significantly higher than the tally from DHS for September, when it was 39,501; from August, when it was 37,048; and last October, when it was 32,724.

U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions rose dramatically in the weeks before the election.

Border agents also reported an uptick in the number of unaccompanied minors, and of adults traveling with children, trying to enter the United States under some sort of “family unit” semblance, the Daily Caller reported.

By the numbers, “family unit” apprehensions rose by 118 percent between October 2015, where there were 6,025, and October 2016.

So what’s Johnson and the Obama administration going to do about it?

From the Daily Caller:

“DHS Sec. Jeh Johnson said that in reaction to the increased level of illegal immigration, he has instructed immigration and border enforcement officials to increase detention space. He added that the government is also working with other countries to ‘repatriate their citizens more quickly.’ …

“‘As a result, there are currently about 41,000 individuals in our immigration detention facilities — typically, the number in immigration detention fluctuates between 31,000 and 34,000 – and I have authorized Immigration and Customs Enforcement to acquire additional detention space for single adults so that those apprehended at the border can be returned to their home countries as soon as possible,’ he added.”

By comparison, the incoming Trump has pledged to build a wall, and make Mexico pay for it, and begin deportation proceedings against some of those living openly but illegally in the country.
