Malcolm Gladwell, 53, is an English-born Canadian writer — a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996, and the celebrated author of 5 books that were on The New York Times Best Seller list, e.g., The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (2000).
In an interview two days before the presidential election (watch it here), while completely ignoring Hillary Clinton’s criminality, Gladwell predicted that Donald Trump will be in jail within a year.
As recounted by Scotty Hendricks for BigThink, Nov. 10, 2016, in predicting Trump’s imprisonment, Gladwell cites the various lawsuits for fraud in cases such as the Trump University lawsuit — which Trump settled yesterday for $25 million. Gladwell predicts there will be “criminal charges” against Trump forthcoming and compares Trump’s situation to Watergate.
Gladwell also calls Trump supporters immoral. Using dime-store psychology, Gladwell attributes the Trump phenomenon to “moral licensing,” by which is meant that the election of a black president, Obama, gave Americans a blank moral check — the freedom to act in a less moral fashion at a later time. In other words, Americans pat ourselves on the back for the virtuous act of having elected a black man as President, and feel we’ve earned the right to act immorally. As Gladwell puts it:
“Having taken the extraordinary step of electing a black man as president… Americans feel free to indulge every dark impulse inside their hearts, because they think they have proven to the world how open minded they are…. I think there is something to that theory.”
What a load of horse manure.
Gladwell also sees the 2016 election as a demonstration of Americans’ sexism. To him, sexism is the only way to explain the number of breaks that Donald Trump seemed to have had in this election. It is a sexism that reflects on Americans in general — their refusal to vote for a woman who is honest in her desire for power, more aggressive and less modest in her disposition than seems becoming for a woman in politics. More horse manure out of Gladwell’s mouth:
“To me, the most disturbing lesson about this election is that the United States is a good deal less open to women in positions of power than it would like to pretend that it is.”
Wikipedia says “Gladwell describes himself as a Christian” and that 53-year-old “Gladwell is unmarried and has no children.”
In a fawning interview of Gladwell for the UK’s Independent, Deborah Ross describes Gladwell as “mixed-race” — his mother is Jamaican. Ross says Gladwell:
“lives alone in Manhattan…. He is eating a cheese toastie and drinking a cup of tea, most elegantly, with his little finger sticking out…. He returns to his tea, pinkie in the air. He is very elegant generally, and moves with fabulous grace…. he has no wife or kids to distract him.”
Good grief. When was the last time you’ve seen anyone, man or woman, hold a tea cup with the pinkie finger in the air?
