At least one person has been murdered after a “masked” murderer stormed a religious retirement home for monks in Montpellier, France, on Thursday evening. Special police units cleared the building, but the suspect remains at large.

Anti-terrorist police were searching for a masked gunman overnight after at least one woman, believed to be a nun, was murdered at a home for retired missionary monks in the south of France.

The bloodbath unfolded at the Green Oaks care home in the village of Montferrier-sur-Lez, north of Montpellier, soon after 9.30pm.

Shots were heard as the unidentified intruder attacked member of staff and members of an elderly religious community belonging to the Society of African Missions.

Anti-terrorist police were searching for a masked gunman overnight after at least one woman, believed to be a nun, was murdered at a home for retired missionary monks in the south of France.

The bloodbath unfolded at the Green Oaks care home in the village of Montferrier-sur-Lez, north of Montpellier, soon after 9.30pm.

Shots were heard as the unidentified intruder attacked member of staff and members of an elderly religious community belonging to the Society of African Missions.

Police have put up roadblocks around the area to try and detain the killer on the run.

One warden is said to have ‘discreetly raised the alarm,’ before being bound and gagged by the man, who was armed with a sawn off shotgun and a knife.

The woman was killed with a knife after contacting authorities and was found by police with her throat cut, according to local media.There are also reports that a man has been found dead in the Green Oaks care home, located in Montferrier-sur-Lez. Witnesses say the masked man was wearing a hoody and armed with a knife and sawn-off shotgun.Anti-terror police are still searching for the suspect after he reportedly evaded capture and escaped before authorities arrived at the scene, sparking a manhunt.Roadblocks have been set up to try and detain the killer.

The search for the gunman continues

One source claimed a caretaker was bound and gagged by the attacker but was able to free herself and contact police after escaping from the home in Montferrier-sur-Lez, a small commune around 10km north of Montpellier.Armed police are surrounding the Maison de Retraite des Missions Africaines (African Missions Retirement Home) as they try to get the situation under control.

Located in Montferrier-sur-Lez, the home houses 70 retired missionaries who have worked in Africa, as well as several nuns.Montferrier-sur-Luz Mayor Michel Fraysse said: “A large number of security forces, firefighters and ambulance personnel are at the scene.”

The victim is believed to be a nun who lived at the home.An official said: “One woman, a resident was assassinated. The security forces have evacuated the residents, about 60, who are safe and sound.”Police conducted room-to-room searches of the property as they tried to get the situation under control.
