This past Thanksgiving, Cubans in Miami ended up celebrating more than they anticipated for. With news of Fidel Castro’s death, Cubans went out to the streets of Calle 8 to celebrate the dictator’s demise and Sentir Cubano, a small shop near little Havana, also took part in the celebration.
One of their popular items being sold was a party kit retailed at $24.99 called “Viva Cuba Libre,” which included a non-alcoholic apple cider labeled “open only when Castro dies,” a T-shirt that reads “muerto el perro, se acabo la rabia” (when the dog dies, the rabies goes away) and toilet paper with Castro’s face on it. In death, now Castro can be remembered when people sit on the throne.
Also being sold was a bottle of hot sauce called “Burn in Hell, Fidel.”
The owner of the store, Maria Vazquez, commented that she had sold 120 of the kits and more of them online.
“It’s a way of finding closure for people,” she said. “They are feeling proud of their roots. Even Venezuelans and Colombians wanted to have a Cuban flag.”
